Glendora Rolls Past Sailors, 26-10 : DIVISION IV

Newport Harbor fell behind by 17 points at halftime and lost to Glendora, 26-10, in the first round of the Southern Section Division IV playoffs Friday at Citrus College.

Glendora (8-1-2) scored on its first three possessions, and outgained the Sailors, 227-132, in total yards in the first half.

The Sailor defense had trouble stopping Glendora quarterback Rob Schult. Schult completed his first eight passes and was 11 of 14 for 161 yards at halftime.

Trailing 20-0, Newport Harbor (7-4) got on the board as time expired in the first half on Wade Tift’s 37-yard field goal.

The Sailors came out shooting in the second half, scoring on the first play of the third quarter. Tift ran 45 yards and kicked the extra point to make the score 20-10.

But Glendora, lead by Schult, didn’t break. Schult hit Ben Russell on a 62-yard touchdown pass to put the Tartans ahead, 26-10.

Schult completed 16 of 20 passes for 271 yards and a touchdown. He completed five of six in the second half.

The other half of the Tartans’ attack, running back Mathis Ward, gained 93 yards in 20 carries, and scored three touchdowns. Ward scored on runs of 24, 5 and 5 yards in the first half.

Sailor quarterback Ryan Smith completed 15 of 27 passes for 118 yards, and Tift finished with 86 yards in 18 carries.
