OUTLOOK

Unlike last year, where Heusser was confident his team could stay in the thick of things, this year, he isn’t expecting miracles. In fact, he thinks his team will finish somewhere between fourth and sixth place. And after 20 years of coaching boys’ and girls’ basketball, one tends to be a realist when it comes to team predictions. One big reason for Heusser’s caution is that he lost his top three starters--Rachel Matemate, Yamila Olmedo and America Robledo--to graduation. Last year, his team tied for second with Garden Grove and Kennedy and had a record of 10-4 in league. Nevertheless, Heusser thinks returning starters Remmel, at forward, and Torres, at guard, will be able to fill in some of the void. But again, unlike last year, there doesn’t appear to be a strong presence from the junior varsity ranks coming up. Offensively, Heusser said quickness and intensity are the Cavaliers’ assets. And this will be especially true on defense. But whether they can remain intense throughout the season will be the question. Heusser hopes Diaz, Luarca and Harrell, who have come up from the JV, will be able to add some spark. Other players who Heusser hopes will be able to add to the team’s efforts are point guards Jamie Johnson and 6-2 Suzanne Peterson.
