FULLERTON : Students Attend Mass for Firefighters

Students at a Catholic school attended a special Mass last week to honor firefighters who worked to defeat brush fires throughout Southern California.

More than 300 students at St. Juliana Falconieri School paid tribute Thursday to the firefighters in the ceremony.

“The kids were concerned about them,” said Principal Mary Santoni, noting that three of the students have fathers who left to fight the fires.

“With the number of students who have relatives and friends in one of the fire areas, we decided we needed to have a little closure,” Santoni said.

About 20 firefighters from the Fullerton and Brea fire departments came to the Mass. The Fullerton Fire Department sent two trucks to the program.

And Msgr. John F. Sammon, chaplain to most county fire departments, also attended. The religious celebration also recognized those who lost lives or homes during the recent fires.

Students at the school, which teaches kindergarten through eighth grades, recently made a gift of food, clothing and money to the Red Cross to be given to fire victims, Santoni said.
