OUTLOOK

Brown’s mantra this season seems to be consistency, and if the Hawks can match his expectations, they could challenge for the league title. Last year, spotty play doomed them to fourth place and missing the playoffs. “We could play very well on occasion, and then we could turn around and play poorly,” Brown said. “We are hoping a year of experience has helped us to be more consistent.” With four starters back, the Hawks have one of the most-experienced teams in the league. With McDonald, Charles and Hale, they also have one of the bigger front lines. Brown worries that defensive quickness, outside shooting and ballhandling will be weaknesses, but he is encouraged by the improvement of point guard Mansouri. McDonald, second team all-league, has the potential to be a prolific inside scorer but must stay out of foul trouble. Brown says Vedder might have the most natural talent on the team, but he might be rusty after sitting out last season to concentrate on football.
