Why College Football Fans Love the Polls

End of the season, teams building to peaks, putting it all on the line to prove superiority. Notre Dame goes head to head with Florida State and proves it is a better team, then (after losing to Boston College) finds itself ranked lower in the “national championship” polls. Boston College proves head to head it is better than Notre Dame, and is ranked lower than either Notre Dame or Florida State.

What is the point of competition? Just make up polls and forget the games. No more injuries, no more budget problems, just false pride, regional prejudice and irrational hype.

Even though I am a Nebraska fan, I must say that I agree with the AP poll that has Nebraska second in the nation. The coaches’ poll is off the mark with Nebraska No. 1. After all, the sportswriters are the ones with the best understanding of this complex game of football, since they are the ones who have actually played this game, formulated defensive and offensive strategies, scouted thousands of players and spent long hours away from their families trying to perfect the on-side kickoff.

Those coaches don’t know anything about this stuff. Who do they think they are?

It was obvious what cost the Irish the game in the final minute: all of those players and fans saying the same prayers--on the B.C. side of the field.

Since Notre Dame beat Florida State to become No. 1 and since Boston College beat No. 1 Notre Dame and since Northwestern beat Boston College earlier this year, it is quite obvious that Northwestern is No. 1.
