OUTLOOK

The Sailors lost only one player from last year’s team, but it happened to be the best player in school history. It is no surprise that with Michaela Ross, Newport Harbor reached the Division III-AA semifinals the past two years. Now, the adjustment will be making do without her. Gina Heads and Evarts are returning all-league first-team players, but they are also the only seniors. Heads may be the most physically strong player in the county; she’s a weightlifter. Jakosky expects the Sailors to get off to a slow start, and for good reason: Evarts, Schutz, Wilson and Bowman are members of highly-ranked tennis and volleyball teams that could still be playing in late November. That means they won’t get on the basketball court until December, and that means the Sailors will be behind everyone else. They may be better in the playoffs than they are in league, provided they get that far. Either someone will have to emerge as the scorer Ross was last year, or everyone on the team will have to accelerate her game. The latter is more likely. If someone does develop into a prolific scorer, the most likely candidate is Evarts, though Clayton has shown some potential.
