OUTLOOK

First-year coach Smith directs a team that enters the season as a definite dark horse. A best-case scenario would probably have the Eagles sneaking into third place and earning an automatic playoff qualifying berth. More likely, they would get into the playoffs as an at-large team from a league that is pretty tough. Nolan, the leading scorer (16.6 points), was a first-team all-league player last season, and Moohr a second-teamer. But After Nolan, the scoring dropped off dramatically to Keane’s six points. The primary goal offensively is to spread the scoring around this season, and that task falls to Keane, the point guard, who must improve upon her 2.7 assists per game last year. Her responsibility is to get the ball to post players Dionne and Noonan, both 6-footers, who should become an integral part of Santa Margarita’s half-court scheme. The Eagles have made a commitment to defense, with it becoming the No. 1 priority, the biggest change in the complexion of last year’s team. “We’re going to exert most of our energy on defense and rest on offense,” Smith said.
