BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Mater Dei Wins Tip-Off Classic Title

Miles Simon scored 33 points, making nine of 11 three-point shots, and Clay McKnight added 16 as Mater Dei defeated Newport Harbor, 77-46, in the championship game of the Daily Pilot Tip-Off Classic Saturday night at Corona del Mar High School.

The Monarchs (4-0) made 14 three-pointers, and jumped out to a 38-18 halftime lead. Josh Porter and Darren Hite added 10 points apiece for Mater Dei.

Newport Harbor (3-1) was led by Ramy Shoukry, who scored 16 points.

In a third-place game of the tournament:

El Toro 63, Corona del Mar 54--Moody Michael scored 14 points for El Toro (3-1). Ramin Bastani had 23 points for Corona del Mar (2-2).

In other tournament games:

Estancia 74, Calvary Chapel 71--Mark Pierson scored 22 points and had 10 rebounds for Estancia (2-2), in the consolation championship game.

Huntington Beach 60, Brea-Olinda 47--Rod Higgenbotham scored 16 points and Zack Montgomery added 10 to lead Huntington Beach (1-3).

In the Orange Lutheran Tournament:

Orange 76, Pacifica 72--Gil Gonzalez led the Panthers in scoring with 16 points. Pat Harris added 14. Pacifica’s Chris Vlasic led both teams in scoring with 24 points. David Neal scored 12 points and was named Tournament MVP for Orange.

Buena Park 45, Los Angeles Cathedral 42--Matt Daigle and Joe Valentin each had seven points for Buena Park in a consolation game.

Magnolia 99, Orange Lutheran 74--Frank Henderson scored a game-high 25 points to help the Sentinels take third place. Brandon Hearvey had 19 points for Magnolia (2-1). Orange Lutheran is (1-2).

Laguna Beach 47, Mission Viejo 37--Gordon Orsborn and Ian McDonald each scored 16 points for the Artists in a consolation game. Laguna Beach (2-1) outscored the Diablos, 28-15, in the second half to get the victory.

In the Gahr Tournament:

Esperanza 53, Fountain Valley 51 (OT)--Mike Lawson scored a game-high 18 points and Billy Omer had 15 points, including 13 of 14 free throws to lead Esperanza (3-1) to the consolation championship. Phil Domingo and Dan Keller each scored 10 points to lead Fountain Valley (2-2).

In the Sunbird Tournament:

Los Alamitos 79, Katella 44-- Tim Lin was named tournament MVP after leading the Griffins with 28 points. This was Los Alamitos’ second Sunbird Tournament title in a row.

In other Sunbird Tournament games:

Savanna 63, Servite 47--Todd Wilson, the 6-foot-4 senior forward, led Savanna (3-1) with 23 points. Rocky Gharhary added 19 points for the Rebels, who took third place in the tournament. Mark Seaton had 19 points and 16 rebounds for Servite (2-2).

Woodbridge 59, Downey Warren 53--Luron Croney led the Warriors with 15 points. Chris Talbott added 12 points, hitting two three-pointers for Woodbridge (3-1) for fifth place.

Western 59, Sunny Hills 45--Neil Hensley scored 20 points, Paul Lindameyer 10 points and 12 rebounds in the Pioneers victory.
