OUTLOOK

Huntington Beach shared the league championship last season with Marina, and though the Oilers lost their top player, Clare Walker, who is at Pepperdine, they had a successful summer competing in the Colorado tournament that included victories over Nevada, Utah and Wyoming state champions. Team strengths are depth and quickness. The weakness is size. The Oilers have no centers, only guards and forwards. Castro, from Brazil, is their most physical player. Huntington Beach has finished fourth, third, second and first in Bartlett’s first four years as coach. The Oilers were beaten in the Division I-A quarterfinals last season by eventual section champion Ventura Buena, 64-60. In the “What might have been” deptartment, Buena beat Quartz Hill in the semifinals, 69-20. Sportswriters will have to learn to spell the name of Phouangmaly Pravonguiengkham, who has shown great promise and will see plenty of playing time. The team’s conditioning could play an important role in its success as it presses opponents and tries to turn its defense into an offense.
