The Ventura High boys’ basketball team edged Venice, 68-64, in a first-round game of the Beverly Hills Tournament at Beverly Hills.

Cougar guard John-Ryan Kern scored a game-high 27 points to lead Ventura (3-10). Teammate Paul Lozano added 17.

In other boys’ basketball:

Grant 69, University 35--Four players scored in double figures as the Lancers jumped to a 40-9 halftime lead in their season opener.

Montclair Prep 69, Westside Prep 38--Forward Steve Sydnor scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Mounties (4-0) in the Flintridge Tournament.

Moorpark 93, Bell-Jeff 69--Keith Linton scored 30 points to lead the Musketeers (3-0) in a first-round game of the Faith Baptist Tournament.

In girls’ basketball:

Poly 46, Fairfax 44--The Parrots overcame a 13-point fourth-quarter deficit in a nonleague game Monday night at Poly.

Harvard-Westlake 74, Hawthorne 39--Angie Wong scored 21 points and had six assists to lead the Wolverines (2-0) in the Beverly Hills Tournament.
