BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : CLU Stays Hot, Improves to 5-0 With 79-69 Win

Cal Lutheran’s torrid basketball start continued Wednesday as the Kingsmen defeated Westmont, 79-69, at home. Cal Lutheran improved to 5-0, its fastest beginning since 1983, when it opened the season with eight consecutive victories.

Cal Lutheran won despite shooting 46% from the field and committing 20 turnovers. But the Kingsmen, who got a game-high 23 points and five steals from forward Damon Ridley, made eight three-point shots and forced 27 turnovers by the Warriors, who fell to 3-2.

BOYS

Buena 80, Saugus 66--Robbie Knight scored 25 of his 29 points in the second half and four teammates finished in double figures for the Bulldogs (2-3) in a consolation game of the Beverly Hills tournament.

John Hernandez scored 32 for Saugus (2-3).

Poly 59, El Camino Real 57--Steve Peralta hit a three-pointer with one second to play to win the nonleague game. Peralta had nine of his 22 points in the fourth quarter. Charles Adams scored 25 for El Camino Real.

Montclair Prep 53, Sierra Vista 47--Reed Berglund scored 17 points and Wess Hinkston had 14 as the Mounties (5-1) took third place in the Flintridge tournament.

Santa Clara 66, Littlerock 50--Damian Cantrell scored 24 points and Damien Smith added 14 to lead visiting Santa Clara in a nonleague game. Littlerock’s Hassan Phillips scored 15 points.

Hart 63, Culver City 59--Eric Spindt made a three-pointer with 45 seconds to play as the Indians advanced to the semifinal round of the Beverly Hills Invitational. Spindt scored 22 points and Cody Patterson added 15 points for Hart.

Campbell Hall 66, Leuzinger 65--Justin Wallace’s two free throws with 17 seconds left gave the Vikings the win in a quarterfinal game of the El Segundo tournament. Alex Lopez scored 32 points to lead Campbell Hall (5-0).

Bishop Montgomery 64, Crespi 44--Senior forward Jayson Sanders led Bishop Montgomery with 21 points in the second round of the El Segundo tournament.

WOMEN

Glendale 58, College of the Desert 50--Susie Woo led host Glendale in the nonconference game with 20 points, and three Vaqueros had 10 or more rebounds.

GIRLS

Monroe 45, San Fernando 26--Dimara Haymond had 14 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Vikings (3-1) past San Fernando (0-3) in a nonleague game.

El Camino Real 61, Poly 22--Forward Jessica Dinaberg had eight points, 10 rebounds and eight assists for the Conquistadores. It was the first outing of the season for Dinaberg, a star volleyball player.
