TIMES STAFF WRITERS

There was no shortage of quality quarterbacks and running backs to choose from for The Times’ 1993 Westside high school football team.

Six quarterbacks passed for more than 1,000 yards and two others passed for more than 900. Four running backs rushed for more than 1,000 yards and two others rushed for more than 900.

The players selected to the Westside team were chosen by Times sportswriters based on nominations from area coaches, all of whom were asked to participate.

Culver City, St. Bernard, Venice and Westchester each had three players named to the first team.

The Centaurs, who advanced to the Southern Section Division VII quarterfinals under first-year Coach Rob Moore, were represented by quarterback Damon Williams, receiver Jasiri Rodell and defensive back Chris Ellison.

The Vikings, who lost in the first round of the Division IV playoffs, were represented by running back Carlos Meeks, offensive lineman Matt Higgins and defensive lineman Eric Caruso.

Venice linebacker Gabriel Shaibi was selected to the defensive team for the second consecutive year, joining teammates Robert Hayes, a defensive back, and Michael Barry, a kicker.

Representing City Section 4-A Division semifinalist Westchester were Seka Edwards, The Times’ 1992 Westside back of the year, offensive lineman Larry Moore and defensive back Tony Griffin.

At least one player from each of the 14 Westside schools was selected to the first or second team.

In addition to Edwards and Shaibi, Murphy receiver Gibbons St. Paul was a first-team selection for the second consecutive year.

Other players named to the first-team offense: Running backs Kenny Jackson (St. Monica) and Tyrone Evans (Fairfax); linemen Corey Nieto (St. Monica) and Harold Powers (Santa Monica).

Other players named to the first-team defense: Backs Az-Zahir Hakim (Fairfax) and Mike Williams (University); linebackers Brian Messing (Brentwood) and J’Von Willis (Santa Monica); linemen Leshaun Bell (University) and Andrew Kline (Beverly Hills).

Players named to the first team will be guests of The Times at an awards breakfast Sunday at the Guest Quarters Suite Hotel, 1707 4th St., Santa Monica. Winners of the Westside back, lineman and coach-of-the-year awards will be announced at the breakfast.

Here is a position-by-position look at The Times’ 1993 Westside team.

QUARTERBACKS

Damon Williams (Culver City)--The junior completed 77 of 162 attempts for 1,562 yards and 12 touchdowns. He also played receiver in the playoffs and had two scoring receptions, including the game-winning TD catch against Azusa.

Seka Edwards (Westchester)--The Comets won 20 games and two Coastal Conference championships the past two seasons with Edwards as quarterback. He passed for 2,053 yards and 28 TDs. Edwards guided the Comets to the City 4-A semifinals, the furthest the team has advanced since 1988. Against Venice on Nov. 5, he caught a game-winning 25-yard TD pass from running back Jermaine Lewis in a 38-27 victory. Edwards passed for four TDs in a 35-34 victory over Crenshaw in the first round of the 4-A playoffs.

RUNNING BACKS

Tyrone Evans (Fairfax)--Evans led the area in rushing with 1,434 yards and 11 TDs in 130 carries. The 5-foot-11 senior’s best game came in a 29-25 win over Manual Arts as he rushed for 226 yards in 14 carries and scored three touchdowns--two rushing and one receiving.

Kenny Jackson (St. Monica)--In his first season playing football, Jackson led the Westside with 19 TDs. He was second in the area in rushing with 1,319 yards in 171 carries. After struggling to learn the offense in the first two games, Jackson rushed for more than 100 yards in eight of the Mariners’ next nine games. He rushed for 187 yards and four touchdowns against St. Anthony and 258 yards and two touchdowns against Pius X.

Carlos Meeks (St. Bernard)--Meeks was the Vikings’ leading rusher. He ran for 1,354 yards and 14 touchdowns in 207 attempts. His best game came Oct. 15 in a 35-22 victory over St. Francis. He rushed for 256 yards in 31 carries, caught three passes for 46 yards and scored three TDs, including the game-winner on a three-yard run.

RECEIVERS

Jasiri Rodell (Culver City)--The junior had 29 receptions for 706 yards, an average of 24.3 yards a reception, and scored eight touchdowns.

Gibbons St. Paul (Murphy)--St. Paul scored a TD in all but two games. He had 56 receptions for 1,124 yards and 13 TDs. Thanks to an assortment of spin moves, fakes and 4.5-second speed, much of his yardage was gained after receptions. St. Paul was voted Santa Fe League offensive player of the year.

OFFENSIVE LINEMEN

Harold Powers (Santa Monica)--Powers, one of the area’s fastest lineman, often could be spotted making a second block downfield. He also played defense and was long snapper on conversions.

Matt Higgins (St. Bernard)--Higgins, a three-year starter for the Vikings, played strong tackle and defensive tackle. He was an All-Mission League selection as a junior and senior. Higgins has quick feet and good technique. He also played defensive tackle.

Larry Moore (Westchester)--Moore was a two-year starter at center, inside linebacker and defensive tackle. He used his quickness to gain an advantage over opponents. Moore was one Westchester’s captains and called blocking schemes. On defense, Moore was one of the team’s leading tacklers.

Corey Nieto (St. Monica)--Nieto, an offensive tackle, used his blend of quickness and strength to help open holes for running back Kenny Jackson.

KICKER

Michael Barry (Venice)--In only his second year of organized football, Barry reached the end zone on 90% of his kickoffs, made six of eight field-goal attempts and averaged 41.2 yards on punts. His 41-yard field goal with four seconds remaining beat University, 17-14.

LINEBACKERS

Brian Messing (Brentwood)--Messing scored the winning TD on a one-yard run with 1 minute 23 seconds left in Brentwood’s 35-34 victory over Faith Baptist on Saturday. It was Brentwood’s second consecutive Southern Section Eight-Man Large Schools Division championship. Messing has a 3.2 grade-point average and hopes to attend an Ivy League school.

Gabriel Shaibi (Venice)--A returning first-team player, Shaibi was the first Gondolier player to call defensive signals on the field, according to co-coach Tony Chretin.

J’Von Willis (Santa Monica)--Willis averaged five tackles a game and was often Santa Monica’s key player on a blitz. He also played running back and averaged 4.28 yards a carry and scored two TDs.

DEFENSIVE LINEMEN

Leshaun Bell (University)--”Whenever we needed a big play, Leshaun would be there for a sack or a key tackle,” University Coach Marshall Jones said. “He’d be all over the field.”

Eric Caruso (St. Bernard)--Caruso, a nose guard, also played inside linebacker. He led the team in tackles with 63, quarterback sacks with 15 and recovered fumbles with three. He also blocked four extra-point attempts and a field goal.

Andrew Kline (Beverly Hills)--Kline, who was one of Cal-Hi Sports’ top 400 prospects, lived up to the preseason billing. He had five sacks, forced three fumbles and had 64 tackles, including five for losses. Kline was selected to the Ocean League first team.

DEFENSIVE BACK

Chris Ellison (Culver City)--Ellison led the Centaurs with 122 tackles and five interceptions. “He was the heart and soul of the defense,” Coach Rob Moore said. As a running back, he gained 512 yards in 103 carries and scored three touchdowns.

Tony Griffin (Westchester)--Griffin, a strong safety, also played tight end. Griffin injured his shoulder in a City 4-A semifinal playoff game against Dorsey that Westchester lost, 29-15.

Az-Zahir Hakim (Fairfax)--Hakim was Fairfax’s most versatile player. He played cornerback, strong safety, free safety, quarterback, receiver and tailback. In the season-opening game against Gardena, Hakim had a hand in five of the Lions’ six TDs.

Robert Hayes (Venice)--Hayes is Venice’s fastest player and used his speed to shut down receivers. As a running back, he gained 1,303 yards in 190 carries and scored 10 TDs. Although he injured a hand midway through the season, he continued to play.

Mike Williams (University)--Williams is adept at pass coverage and run support. He made a key interception in University’s victory over Westchester.
