BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : After Overcoming 18-Point Deficit, Chatsworth Lets Dorsey Get Away

Chatsworth High’s basketball team blew 11 layups in the first half and still led by five points midway through the fourth quarter in Thursday’s nonleague game against Dorsey.

Then the Chancellors blew their lead too.

Host Dorsey emerged with a 72-68 victory and improved to 3-0, ruining a 26-point, 10-rebound performance by Chatsworth’s Eddie Miller.

Chatsworth was outscored, 13-4, over the final 3 1/2 minutes.

The Chancellors (4-2) trailed by 18 points midway through the second quarter before rallying.

Kennedy 61, Hamilton 60--Trivonne Scott (10 points) made one of two free throws with 20 seconds left to give host Kennedy the victory in the nonleague game. Hamilton had one final possession, but Kennedy’s Dante Jones stole the ball with three seconds left to preserve the win for the Golden Cougars (3-2).

Taft 78, Banning 73--Ricky Steele scored 15 of his 32 points and pulled down nine of his 19 rebounds in the third quarter as the Toreadors (4-2) outscored the Pilots, 24-4, to overcome a 10-point halftime deficit. Lamont Magee had a key three-pointer after Banning (3-3) cut the lead to 67-66.

Glendale 61, Rio Mesa 37--Manny Gonzalez had 21 points and four steals to lead Glendale (4-2) to victory in the consolation quarterfinal of the Beverly Hills tournament.

St. Bonaventure 67, Nordhoff 62--Mark Sebek scored a game-high 40 points, including 16 in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough for Nordhoff in the first round of the Fillmore tournament.

Rod Tepesano had 25 points and seven rebounds for St. Bonaventure (4-1).

Santa Paula 54, L.A. Baptist 47--Chris Cannon and Manuel Escamilla each scored 14 points to lead the Cardinals (2-1) in a Fillmore tournament first-round game.

Oak Park 55, Moorpark 53--Brian McMullen scored five of his nine points in the fourth quarter to help Oak Park hold off Moorpark in a quarterfinal game of the Faith Baptist tournament.

Oak Park led, 52-51, with two minutes left when McMullen scored on a layup, was fouled, and converted the free throw to give the Eagles (5-0) their final points.

Faith Baptist 68, Calabasas 50--Tony Hoggats scored 10 of his 17 points in the second half as the Contenders (2-1) outscored Calabasas, 39-19, after intermission to advance to the semifinals of their tournament.

Harvard Westlake 71, Chadwick 58--Jason Collins had 23 points and 13 rebounds for the Wolverines (4-0) in a quarterfinal of the Faith Baptist tournament.

MEN

Kings River 79, Canyons 77 (OT)--Kimjwama Randolph of Kings River made a 15-foot jump shot with three seconds remaining in overtime to break a 77-77 tie and give the Tigers (6-3) a win in a Mid-State Tournament first-round game at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo.

Randy Eason led the Cougars (1-6) with 21 points.

GIRLS

Chaminade 42, La Reina 35--Shawnte Mitchell had 19 points to lead the Eagles (5-1) in a nonleague game at La Reina.

Monroe 46, Locke 41--Dimara Haymond had 15 points and 18 rebounds to lead the Vikings (4-1) in a Garfield tournament first-round game at Garfield High.

Westlake 47, Esperanza 45--Shanon Sincock’s two free throws with 3.2 seconds remaining gave the Warriors the victory in the consolation quarterfinal game of the Brea-Olinda tournament.
