A 60-year-old North Hollywood woman was killed while crossing a street after she was struck by a Chevy Blazer, landed on its hood and fell to the street before she was hit and dragged by a second vehicle, Los Angeles police said.

Carmen Destrada was walking in a marked crosswalk when she was hit, investigators said.

The accident occurred as Destrada was crossing Stagg Street at Vineland Avenue in Sun Valley about 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Officer Clark Baker said.

After the Blazer, driven by Miguel Hernandez, 28, of Sun Valley, struck her, the impact lifted her onto the hood. Hernandez told police that he did not see her, Baker said.

Destrada was run over by another driver who also apparently failed to see her, police said. Her body became trapped under the car and she was dragged 131 feet down the street, Baker said.

“I stopped and got out of my car,” a witness told traffic investigators. “I was on the sidewalk, close to her, and then another car hit her. It stopped for awhile, then kept driving.”

Destrada was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

Police are searching for the driver of the second vehicle--a man wearing a red and white long-sleeve shirt and driving a 1970s model Toyota Celica. He will be charged with hit-and-run driving, Baker said.

Hernandez pulled over after the accident.
