PREP ROUNDUP : Santa Ana Captures Title in Irvine Wrestling Meet

Ron Hernandez won at 130 pounds and was named the lower-weight most valuable wrestler to lead Santa Ana to the championship of the Vaquero Classic Saturday at Irvine High.

Santa Ana scored 147 points to top Capistrano Valley (128).

In the El Toro nine-way wrestling tournament:

Laguna Hills wins--Phanh Nguyen (103 pounds) and Jeff Greco (130) were both 8-0 to lead the Hawks in the dual-meet competition. San Clemente was 7-1.

Buena Park’s Vince Virgen and San Clemente’s John Witting were most valuable wrestlers.

In the Foothill 10-way wrestling tournament:

Anaheim wins--Anaheim, led by victories from Alex Coria (119 pounds), Leonard Ruiz (145) and Reuben Droughns (160), was 6-0 in the dual-meet tournament. Woodbridge, which also had three champions--Tim Lee (125), Mike Dowdell (130) and Jessy Law (189)--finished second at 5-1.

In the Irvine girls’ soccer tournament:

El Toro 1, Irvine 0--Jenny Fricke scored the game-winner with 12 minutes remaining as El Toro (5-1) won the title. El Toro’s defense held Irvine to three shots on goal, helping goalie Heather Lindstrom post her fourth shutout.

In the Cerritos girls’ soccer tournament:

Marina 4, Esperanza 0--Kristen Palmer, Cassandra Campbell, Jenny Benson and Shannon Cuthbertson each had one goal to lead Marina (4-0) in the second round.

Mission Viejo 4, La Habra 2--Shannon Cunningham scored four goals and goalie Kelly Farino recorded eight saves to lead Mission Viejo (2-2) in the second round.

In the Magnolia girls’ soccer tournament:

Brea-Olinda JV 1, Katella 0--Kelly Peterson scored on a 25-yard shot off a direct kick midway through the first half to help Brea-Olinda’s JV (4-1-1) into the championship game. The Wildcats will play Troy at 3 p.m. Monday at Magnolia for the title.

In a semifinal of the South Torrance girls’ soccer tournament:

Edison 1, Arcadia 1--Edison won on a penalty kick to advance to the final against Palos Verde Peninsula next Saturday. Julie Koudelka scored Edison’s lone goal.

In the Katella boys’ soccer tournament:

Orange 3, Costa Mesa 0--Defender Brian Villa scored on a pair of 40-yard shots to help the Panthers (4-1-1) to a semifinal victory. Orange will meet Gahr for the championship at 7 p.m. Saturday at UC Irvine.

In the Long Beach Millikan boys’ soccer tournament:

Bell Gardens 1, Ocean View 0--Carlos Farias scored 25 minutes into the first half on a penalty kick for Bell Gardens (3-2) in a quarterfinal. Mike Andres had five saves for Ocean View (2-3).

Anaheim 4, Muir 1--Juan Lopez scored a pair of goals to spark Anaheim in a consolation game. Lopez also scored in a 4-2 quarterfinal loss earlier in the day to Peninsula, the first loss of the year for the Colonists (5-1).

Santa Ana Valley 6, Peninsula 4--Francisco Islas scored three goals, giving him 11 for the season, to lead Santa Ana Valley (6-1).
