PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Santa Ana Valley Defeated in Title Game

Senior guard Joe Austin scored 30 points, and D’Cean Bryant added 24 to lead Lynwood to a 78-72 victory over Santa Ana Valley Saturday night in the championship game of the Coca Cola Converse Classic boys’ basketball tournament at Trabuco Hills High School.

Austin was the unanimous selection as the tournament’s outstanding player.

Lynwood (6-1) set the pace early, working inside Santa Ana Valley’s defense for easy layups to build a 42-29 lead with 1:25 left in the first half.

Austin and Bryant traded baskets early in the third to widen the Knights’ margin to 14, 48-34. Santa Ana Valley closed it to 56-50 at the end of three when Alex Fletcher hit a three-pointer at the buzzer.

Santa Ana Valley took it’s first lead of the night with 4:12 remaining on another three-pointer by Fletcher.

Lynwood went back on top, 70-69, on two free throws by Austin with 2:24 left.

The lead widened to five at 74-69 on a Bryant jumper before Carlos Quezada hit a three-pointer with 1:02 left.

Santa Ana Valley made ten three-pointers and was led by Olujimi Mann’s team-high 19 points and Fletcher’s 18.

In Costa Mesa boys’ basketball tournament:

Century 48, Magnolia 46--Ike Harmon had 13 points to lead Century (4-1) to the tournament championship. Greg Henderson scored 20 points for Magnolia (6-2).

In the Laguna Hills tournament:

Pacifica 75, Dana Hills 66--Chris Vlasic scored 25 points and Ryan Teague added 17 for Pacifica (5-1) in the tournament final. Kent Lacy scored 26 points for Dana Hills.

La Mirada 62, Mission Vieho 53--Jerry Reid had 23 points and Tyler Kalklosch had 20 points for Mission Viejo (2-4) in a third-place game.

In the Cerritos Valley Christian tournament:

Whittier Christian 59, Brentwood 58--Tyler Ream hit two free throws with 10 seconds left to seal the tournament title for Whittier (4-0). Ream finished with 19 points and was tournament MVP. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, son of the ex-Laker, led Brentwood (4-2) with 19 points.

In a third-place game:

Loara 49, Riverside Notre Dame 45--Jason Kowny had 16 points and 12 rebounds and Virgil Forbin added 11 points to lead Loara (5-2) to third place.

In nonleague boys’ basketball:

Lone Pine 64, Southern California Christian 55--Josh Cameron scored 21 points and Brent Pike added 16 for SCC (1-2).

Montclair Prep 58, Orange Lutheran 52--Tony Risberg had 13 points for Orange Lutheran (1-4).

Gateway Christian 60, St. Michael’s 48--Pier Ibe scored 19 points for visiting St. Michael’s (1-3).

In the Lady Rebel girls’ basketball tournament:

Edison 65, Valencia 32--Marie Philman scored a game-high 31 points, including 18 in the second quarter, and had 16 rebounds to lead Edison to the tournament championship.

Philman was named tournament MVP, scoring 42, 17 and 39 points in Edison’s three games. Edison’s Kerry O’Bric and Danielle Wiggins were also All-Tournament selections.

Trabuco Hills 49, Los Amigos 22--Guard Jennifer Ross had 10 points for Trabuco Hills (2-4) in a third-place game. Lilia Aguirre, Dyanna Hatch and Sarah Warnick had nine points for the Mustangs.

In the Rancho Bernardo tournament:

Mater Dei 81, Poway 36--Leticia Oseguera scored 23 points and Melody Peterson added 19 for Mater Dei (6-1) in the title game. Peterson was named tourney MVP, while Oseguera Adriene Botana were all-tournament selections. The Monarchs made 21 of 27 free-throws.

In the Calvary Chapel tournament:

Compton Dominguez 59, Calvary Chapel 24--Blythe Lindsey had five points to lead Calvary Chapel (3-1) in the finals. Lindsey was also named tournament MVP.

Villa Park 62, Buena Park 34--Michelle Miyake had a game-high 22 points, eight steals and eight assists, Erin White added 13 points and Mary Jo Pennington had 10 points and 12 rebounds to lead Villa Park (4-1) in the third-place game.

In the Cerritos tournament:

Esperanza 2, Mater Dei 1--Tina Drescini and Shannon Byrne each scored goals to lead Esperanza (4-1) in the first round. Deanne Ceballos scored the only goal for Mater Dei.

In the Cypress tournament:

Costa Mesa 65, Huntington Beach 52--Heather Robinson led Costa Mesa with 16 points, eight rebounds and five assist for Costa Mesa (3-3) in the first round.

Cypress 71, Torrance 55--Jessica Eggleston had 35 points and Julie Adams had 20 points for Cypress (7-1).

Fountain Valley 57, University 43--Erin Avila scored 14 points and Jennifer Ludwicki added 13 for Fountain Valley (2-2).

Marina 61, Kennedy 44--Martita Emde had 16 points, six assist and six steals for Marina (3-1). Teammate Shandy Robbins led the Vikings with 22 points and 16 rebounds.

In nonleague girls’ basketball:

Capistrano Valley Christian 53, Southern California Christian 14--Andie Shaffner had 15 points to lead Capistrano Valley Christian (2-3).

Canyon 75, Orange Lutheran 47--Dawn Brown scored a game-high 19 points, Robin Kuhlmann had 17 and Sara Spjuit added 16 to lead Canyon (2-3).
