NHL ROUNDUP : Fluke Goal Helps Chicago Gain Tie With Philadelphia

Share

Garry Galley, a normally gregarious Philadelphia Flyer defenseman, took his time coming out for interviews after Saturday’s 2-2 tie with the Chicago Blackhawks at Philadelphia.

He knew there would be a crowd waiting--all because of one goal.

With the Flyers already on a power play in the second period, referee Kerry Fraser raised his arm to whistle a high-sticking penalty on Chicago’s Steve Smith.

Galley spotted teammate Kevin Dineen at the blue line and sent a pass back from low in the offensive zone. The puck eluded Dineen and Philadelphia defenseman Yves Racine got tied up with Fraser.

Flyer goalie Tommy Soderstrom had already headed toward the bench and couldn’t catch up as the puck slid into the net. Chicago’s Christian Ruuttu was credited with the goal.

“It was just one of those fluky things . . . just meant to be,” Galley said. “It happens once in a blue moon and I guess there’s a blue moon out there tonight.”

Galley’s gaffe at 14:48 gave the Blackhawks a 2-1 lead. But, on the ensuing power play, Yves Racine delivered a blast from the point that beat Chicago goalkeeper Jeff Hackett.

Boston 5, Tampa Bay 3--Ray Bourque and Paul Stanton scored 16 seconds apart in the third period as the Bruins rallied from a 3-1 deficit at St. Petersburg, Fla.

Hartford 4, Washington 1--Alexander Godynyuk, acquired Thursday from the Florida Panthers in a trade for Jim McKenzie, had three assists in his Whaler debut at Hartford, Conn.

Montreal 8, Detroit 1--Oleg Petrov scored three goals at Montreal as the Canadiens ended the Red Wings’ five-game winning streak.
