SPORTSCOPE : St. Bernard High Girls Win Title in Santa Barbara

The St. Bernard High girls’ basketball team defeated Napa Justin Siena, 60-33, Thursday night to win the Green Division of the 14th annual Tournament of Champions in Santa Barbara.

The Vikings were the top-seeded team in the Green Division, for smaller schools.

Peninsula, which lost to Fresno Clovis West in a semifinal game on Wednesday night, beat Ontario, 64-19, to finish third in the Gold Division.

The Panthers were seeded second in the Gold Division, for larger schools.

Loyola Marymount third baseman and pitcher Jesse Ibarra has been named to the 25-player 1994 Mizuno Preseason All-America Baseball team selected by Collegiate Baseball magazine.

Ibarra, a junior, batted .299 with 17 home runs and 52 runs batted in last season. As a relief pitcher, he was 2-1 with a 3.41 earned-run average.

An All-West Coast Conference selection, Ibarra was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the fifth round of the free-agent draft in June, but has decided to stay at Loyola.

Ibarra, who also was chosen to an all-league team at the Alaska Summer League, was the only WCC player on the All-America squad.

Two Loyola athletes have been selected to the West Coast Conference’s All-Academic team for the fall sports season.

They are sophomore soccer midfielder Judey Petix and senior cross-country runner Mary Mulligan.

Petix, who had three goals and 11 points last season, also earned all-academic honors in softball last season. The humanities major has a 3.57 grade-point average.

Mulligan, who was Loyola’s third-highest finisher at the WCC meet in October, is a business major with a 3.70 GPA.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s basketball team, which lost two games in a row in Northern California this week, will return home to play the University of Alberta in an exhibition game at 5 p.m. Tuesday in Carson.

The Toros (7-7) suffered back-to-back losses to San Francisco State and Cal State Stanislaus after opening their Northern California trip with a victory over Sonoma State.

Dominguez Hills has been led by guard Karee Bonde (12.9-point average) and center Trimeka Jackson (10.7 points, 10.1 rebounds).

Pitcher Charlie Hough of the Florida Marlins and former Angel manager Gene Mauch will be among the sports celebrities who will participate in the American Red Cross South Bay District’s Celebrity Golf Classic at 11 a.m. Jan. 24 at Cypress Golf Club in Los Alamitos.

The cost is $200 a player, including refreshments, lunch and dinner.

Former major league pitcher Ken Brett, a broadcaster for the Angels, is honorary chairman. Proceeds will go toward Red Cross programs and services in the South Bay.

The Dominguez Hills athletic department will sponsor a baseball camp beginning Monday and ending Wednesday.

The camp is open to boys and girls in the first through 10th grades and will offer personalized and group instruction as well as videotape analysis of hitting and pitching techniques. Toro baseball Coach George Wing will run the clinic, which costs $60 a person.

The Manhattan Beach Parks and Recreation Department will sponsor a holiday baseball camp beginning Monday and ending Friday for children ages 8 to 10.

The camp is open to youths ages 11 to 13. The camp begins at 9 a.m. and end at noon daily at Dorsey Field in Live Oak Park. The cost is $100 a person. Dave Leeper, a former USC All-American, will conduct the camp. He will provide instruction in hitting, fielding and throwing as well as game strategy.

The South Bay Sport and Social Club is accepting applications for its co-ed volleyball, football and softball leagues. Play begins Jan. 16 and ends March 20.

The city of Torrance Parks and Recreation Department is seeking volunteers to coach youth basketball during the 1993-94 season. The program is for boys and girls in kindergarten through eighth grade.

Registration is under way for the Hawthorne Parks and Recreation Department’s youth basketball league. Open play for fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders begins in January at parks throughout the city.
