ROUNDUP : Jessie and Ramirez Lead Ventura’s Second-Half Surge in 81-50 Victory

Brandon Jessie had 16 points and 12 rebounds and Joey Ramirez added 15 points as Ventura College defeated Malaspina (Canada), 81-50, in a semifinal game of the Hancock tournament Tuesday.

Ventura (18-1), the top-ranked team in the state, shot a horrendous 31.0% (13 of 42) from the field in the first half, but the Pirates sank 18 of 37 shots in the second half to pull away.

Glendale 85, ACT Academy (Australia) 73--Ryan Asplund had 22 points and four steals, and Maurice Sowells added 18 points, seven rebounds and six assists for Glendale (8-4) in a first-round game at the Palomar tournament.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Douglas (B.C.) 61, Moorpark 57--Guard Joy Garcia scored 18 points to lead Moorpark (3-9) in a second-round game of the Grossmont tournament in San Diego. Janette Oriza added 16 points and Laura Brown had 12 rebounds.

UC Santa Barbara 85, Cal State Northridge 48--Michelle Esparza had 19 points and Mary Jean Espino came off the bench to score 12 for visiting Cal State Northridge (1-8).

Westlake 64, Crespi 50--Billy Miller scored 17 points to lead the Warriors. Billy Zaruka had eight steals for Westlake (5-1).

Saugus 65, Camarillo 50--Junior Ryan Berg scored a season-high 19 points and had 10 rebounds to pace Saugus (6-6).

BIRMINGHAM TOURNAMENT

Reseda 55, Van Nuys 36--Trenton Cross and Roderick Jones each scored 14 points for undefeated Reseda (10-0).

Monroe 74, Sherman Oaks CES 53--Shaka Stiner scored 21 points and Dante Holly added 19 points and 10 rebounds for Monroe. Charles Lee had 17 points for Sherman Oaks CES.

Birmingham 79, St. Genevieve 54--Scott LeWinter (16 points), Jason Joseph (12) and Mark Ellis (12) led Birmingham (2-4). James Muller had a game-high 18 points for St. Genevieve.

Chaminade 67, Granada Hills 43--Chaminade (4-5), which led by five at the half, went on a 15-0 run early in the third quarter to put Granada Hills away.

Cleveland 65, St. Monica 56--The Cavaliers trailed, 48-45, at the end of the third quarter, but limited the Mariners to eight points in the fourth quarter. Center Jimmy Harris had 13 points to lead a balanced scoring attack for Cleveland (8-4).

Montclair Prep 72, Crossroads 70--Crossroads freshman Baron Davis missed a shot at the buzzer as Montclair Prep held on. Reed Berglund scored 17 points for Montclair Prep (9-2) while Aaron Mintz and Akil Anderson each added 12 points for the Mounties.

Calabasas 63, Yeshiva 53--Billy Hoover and Noel Bloom scored 15 points each to lead the Coyotes (6-6). Ryan Coleman and Nick Alexander added 14 and 13 points.

St. Francis 62, South Bay Lutheran 28--Chris Ott and Braden Weber each scored 14 points to lead St. Francis (7-4).

Santa Paula 76, Fillmore 62--Manuel Escamilla scored 22 points to lead Santa Paula. Cesar Orozco scored a season-high 18 points for Fillmore (4-4).

Oak Park 78, San Marino 69--Oak Park improved to 10-1 and advanced to tonight’s tournament championship behind Ryan Garth (20 points), Shawn Williams (17) and Brandon Creason (13).

Harvard-Westlake 69, Charter Oak 64--Twins Jason (21 points) and Jarron (16) Collins led undefeated Harvard-Westlake in the quarterfinals of the Covina tournament.

Jefferson 87, Taft 83--Lamont Magee scored 27 points and added eight assists for Taft (8-4), which led until the final 15 seconds in the quarterfinals of the Eagle Rock tournament.

Santa Clara 57, Laguna Beach 44--Damian Cantrell scored 30 points and Damien Smith added 13 for Santa Clara (6-5) in the quarterfinals of the Orange tournament.

Rio Mesa 49, Hart 43--Summer Peterson had 30 points and seven rebounds for the Spartans (7-1). LaCresha Clark and Yvette Williams each scored 10 points for Hart (7-6).

Thousand Oaks 55, Chino 51 (OT)--Sophomore Nicki LaSala scored all seven of her team’s points in overtime for the host Lancers. Sara Samimi led Thousand Oaks (7-3) with 14 points.

Simi Valley 52, Medway (Can.) 51--Carrie Billone made a pair of free throws with two seconds left in overtime for Simi Valley (6-4) in the second-round game of the Anaheim Western tournament.

Kennedy 53, Chatsworth 51--Kennedy’s Tamaya Morris sank a three-point shot to tie the score, then stole the ball and drove for the go-ahead layup with 40 seconds to play in a first-round game of the Birmingham tournament.

Crossroads 35, Kennedy 32--Sherisse Smith converted a three-point play with 10 seconds remaining in a third-round game at the L.A. Invitational tournament. Kerrie Garland had 12 points and 20 rebounds for Kennedy (6-4).

North Hollywood 63, Cantwell 49--Anna Selaya’s triple-double helped lead the Huskies in a quarterfinal of the Bell-Jeff tournament. Selaya scored 18 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and had 10 assists for North Hollywood (5-3).

Royal 1, La Salle 0--Nick Butcher scored the only goal of the match to lead the Highlanders (12-1) in the semifinals of the Don Lugo tournament at Cal Poly Pomona.
