WEST ADAMS : Church League Seeks Basketball Players

Share

The Organization of West Adams Christian Athletics is seeking participants for its basketball league, which begins Jan. 13.

The league was started in 1963 as a church-based alternative for youths ages 14 to 18 who do not play on school teams but want the opportunity to play competitively. Though based in West Adams, the organization invites churches from throughout south and central Los Angeles to recruit players from their congregations for the league, which is staffed by about 25 volunteers from various churches.

Participating churches pay a $375 annual fee, which covers the cost of athletic equipment, referees and office supplies.

The organization teaches youngsters sportsmanship and the joy of playing, rather than winning.

Last year, the league enrolled about 150 teen-agers from First AME, Messiah Baptist, Holman United Methodist, Mariah Baptist, Trinity Baptist, Calvary Baptist of Los Angeles and Mt. Mariah Baptist. League players must belong to a participating church.
