MOORPARK : Couple Hospitalized After Car Accident

Share

A Nevada couple remained hospitalized Sunday after the car they were traveling in tumbled off a steep embankment on Grimes Canyon Road near Moorpark late Saturday, authorities said.

The car that Melissa Tibbetts, 18, and Daniel Thorton, 19, were in went off the road near Shekell Road about 9:20 p.m., according to Ventura County Sheriff’s Sgt. Terry Hughes. Officials believe that the car dropped 200 to 300 feet below the roadway.

Hughes said Ventura County firefighters had to rescue Tibbetts, who suffered several broken bones, after she became trapped inside the car. Thorton, who suffered minor internal injuries, managed to free himself and flag down a passing motorist.

They were taken to Los Robles Regional Medical Center in Thousand Oaks, where Tibbetts was listed in fair condition and Thorton was listed in stable condition as of Sunday afternoon, according to a nursing supervisor.

Hughes said the sheriff’s major crimes unit and the California Highway Patrol were investigating the accident. He declined to give more details. A CHP spokeswoman also declined comment on the case.
