A motorist apparently impatient with a slower-moving car on Interstate 15 fired a bullet into the vehicle, killing a young volunteer firefighter, authorities said Sunday.

Emmett Royston, 19, was riding in a Dodge Colt driven by his brother, Ian, 22, when he was shot to death about 1:45 p.m. Friday, said Deputy Mark Lohman of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

The driver of a 1980s Cadillac rapidly approached the Royston car as it traveled in the fast lane of Interstate 15 in the Glen Avon area, about 50 miles east of Los Angeles, investigators said.

“The driver of the Cadillac became impatient and pulled to the right of the Dodge into the No. 2 lane. The driver pointed an unknown type handgun at Emmett and fired one shot, striking him in the face,” Lohman said.

The Cadillac continued north on the freeway at more than 90 m.p.h. No arrest has been made, the deputy said.

After the shooting, Ian Royston drove his brother to the California Department of Forestry station in Glen Avon, where Emmett was a volunteer fireman. The wounded brother was taken to Riverside Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
