Lewis Tops Holyfield’s Wish List
To the surprise of almost no one, Evander Holyfield announced Tuesday that he will attempt to reunify the heavyweight championship titles in 1994 before reconsidering retirement.
Holyfield, the International Boxing Federation and World Boxing Assn. champion, says his preference would be to fight World Boxing Council titleholder Lennox Lewis this spring.
But, if the IBF continues to insist that he fight No. 1 contender Michael Moorer or lose his IBF belt, Holyfield said he will comply and fight Moorer. The winner would be lined up to fight Lewis for the undisputed title in November.
Not in his 1994 plans: former champion Riddick Bowe, who last week offered Holyfield $20 million for a third matchup. Holyfield’s promoter, Dan Duva, said Holyfield probably would receive $15 million to fight Moorer, $20 million for Lewis.
“I didn’t come back in just for money,” Holyfield said. “I came back in for titles. I’ve got one belt hanging out there, and I’ve got to reel it in.
“There should be only one heavyweight champ of the world. I came back to be the champ. Not one of the champs.”
