A recent parolee died after being hit with a dose of pepper spray and two Taser darts during a fight with deputies, a Los Angeles County sheriff’s spokesman said.

Dan Gizowski, 25, died at Glendora Community Hospital about two hours after the Thursday afternoon confrontation, spokesman Rich Erickson said. An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death, he said.

Deputies went to an Azusa address, Erickson said, after receiving a call from a woman who said Gizowski was acting strangely. Seven deputies found him on a living room couch yelling incoherently, the spokesman said.

“He immediately jumped from the couch and fought with deputies,” Erickson said. “Deputies used pepper spray on the suspect, but it had no visible effect. Deputies used the Taser on Gizowski twice, but that had no effect, either.”

After Gizowski was restrained, he had trouble breathing and paramedics took him to the hospital, the sheriff’s spokesman said.

Five deputies suffered injuries, including a dislocated wrist and knee. Gizowski also bit a sergeant on the face and ears, Erickson said.

Gizowski recently served 28 months in prison for possession of narcotics for sale.
