SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The only question facing onlookers of Fremont High’s basketball game against Jefferson Friday night was: How large would the Pathfinders’ margin of victory be? Fremont, which led by as many as 42 points, dominated the entire 32 minutes of play in winning a 95-58 Southeast Conference game at home.

“They are bigger and better than I thought,” said Jefferson Coach Andy Fujitsubo.

The disaster began for Jefferson after point guard Anthony Martin, who scored 13 points on 3-of-13 shooting, sank two free throws to cut Fremont’s lead to 34-21 with 3:35 left in the first half.

From that point on, the Pathfinders closed out the second quarter with a 13-point run and opened the third quarter by scoring the first 10 points.

When Jefferson guard Robert Robinson, who led the Democrats with 18 points, scored with 4:20 remaining in the third, his team was down, 57-24.

“We wore them down,” said Fremont coach Sam Sullivan, “We had a definite size advantage.”

Fremont guard Calvin Patterson enjoyed game-highs in points, 24, and rebounds, eight. “I think our victory was due more to our team’s intensity and emotion than advantage in size,” Patterson said.

Jefferson inability to protect the basketball caused its half-court offense to suffer. The fact that Martin had more turnovers (9) than assists (2) typified the Democrats frustration.

“We couldn’t match up on the boards but we definitely had problems with turnovers,” Fujitsubo said.

Fremont received balanced scoring from its starters and bench as four players, Leon Jones, Antonio Hines, Jamaal Johnson and Thomas Hildreth, scored eight points each.

Jefferson forward Haigi Gant, who also scored eight, had seven rebounds, two blocks and two steals for the Democrats.
