COLLEGE ROUNDUP : UC San Diego Hits Chapman Hard

Share

Chapman learned about humility Tuesday night when the Panthers were soundly defeated by UC San Diego, 77-61, in Orange.

Although the Panthers (8-5) had defeated the Tritons earlier in the season, 81-68, in the Redlands Tournament, UC San Diego (12-3), winners of 10 of its last 11 games, quickly took control.

“They were magnificent,” Chapman Coach Mike Bokosky said of the Tritons. “They were really ready to play. They came out and controlled the tempo. They took a 10-point lead early and we never recovered. They kept their poise, the sign of a real good team.”

Chapman shot only .339 from the field, falling behind, 25-12, on Rodney Lusain’s three-point basket at 12:02 of the first half. With Lusain hitting 18 of his game-high 20 points in the first half from the outside, and freshman center Matt Aune muscling his way inside with 18 points, the Panthers could do little to counter.

The Tritons took a 44-28 halftime lead on Aune’s last-second basket. Chapman made a five-point run at the start of the second half, but UC San Diego went on an 11-3 run, led by Aune, for a 55-36 lead with 14:01 left to play. The Panthers went six minutes without scoring during the spell and never got closer than 14 points with 1:29 remaining.

Stefan Mumaw led Chapman with 14 points.
