NBA ROUNDUP : Pippen, Bulls Pull Away from Jazz

Scottie Pippen scored 23 points and Steve Kerr had a season-high 20 Friday night at Chicago as the Bulls pulled away in the second half to beat the Utah Jazz, 107-91, the Bulls’ 12th consecutive home victory.

Horace Grant added 18 points and 14 rebounds as the Bulls got their 14th victory in 17 games overall. Karl Malone led the Jazz with 26 points and Jeff Malone had 21, but only five in the second half.

John Stockton scored 12 points and had 16 assists for Utah, which has lost four of five.

The Bulls trailed by five at halftime, but used runs at the beginning and end of the third quarter to take a seven-point lead, outscoring the Jazz, 33-21, in the period.

B.J. Armstrong had a three-point play, Pippen a free throw, Pete Myers a driving basket and Pippen a basket in a 12-2 run opening the third quarter as the Bulls took a 56-51 lead.

The Jazz was within two before Toni Kukoc made a free throw and a shovel shot in the lane in another 7-0 spurt, and the Bulls took a 77-70 lead after three quarters.

Golden State 121, Seattle 100--Latrell Sprewell scored 25 points and the Warriors led the entire way at Oakland.

It was the second consecutive loss for Seattle, which still has the league’s best record at 26-5.

Sprewell sealed the victory with an uncontested three-pointer after stealing the rebound of a missed free throw by Chris Mullin, who got only the second triple-double of his career. Sprewell’s three-pointer made the score 106-90 with 5:02 left.

Mullin, making only his fifth start of the season after returning from a hand injury, had 18 points, 10 assists and 12 rebounds. Billy Owens added 22 points for the Warriors, who had lost six of their previous seven regular-season games to Seattle.

Philadelphia 104, Indiana 102--Dana Barros made an 18-foot shot at the buzzer at Philadelphia to lift the 76ers victory over the Pacers in overtime.

The 76ers have won a season-high three consecutive games.

The Pacers tied the score at 102 with 0.5 seconds left in overtime on a tap-in by Derrick McKey off a miss by Haywoode Workman. The 76ers’ Jeff Hornacek inbounded the ball with a cross-court pass to Barros to set up the winning shot.

Minnesota 96, Orlando 92--Chuck Person made a 15-footer with 52 seconds left and Shaquille O’Neal capped a tough night by missing two inside shots down the stretch at Minneapolis.

Isaiah Rider had 19 points and Person 17 off the bench for the Timberwolves, who are 4-2 in 1994 after ending 1993 with a seven-game losing streak.

O’Neal scored 25 points and had nine rebounds, but missed half of his 22 shots and sat out most of the third quarter because of foul trouble.

New Jersey 103, Denver 96--Armon Gilliam, replacing injured Derrick Coleman, scored 24 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Nets at East Rutherford, N.J.

Kevin Edwards added 20 points, including seven in a row in a fourth-period surge that gave the Nets the victory. The Nets led, 90-88, with 6:27 to play before Edwards scored seven points to give New Jersey a 97-88 lead with 5:15 remaining.

Atlanta 113, Dallas 96--Dominique Wilkins and Mookie Blaylock each scored eight points in a 21-4 third-quarter run at Atlanta that lifted the Hawks to their seventh victory in a row.

Kevin Willis, who had the other five points in the decisive run, led the Hawks with 26 points. Wilkins and Stacey Augmon each scored 19 and Blaylock added 15 points and 13 assists.

Portland 115, Miami 110--Clifford Robinson scored 31 points and the Trail Blazers had a season-high 66 points in the first half at Portland.

Robinson made 10 of 12 shots and scored 23 in the first half. Rod Strickland had 20 points, 11 assists and seven rebounds for Portland.

Glen Rice scored 29 points for the Heat, 22 in the first half. Brian Shaw had 21 and Steve Smith had 17 for Miami.
