PREP ROUNDUP : Vaqueros’ Streak Is Stopped

La Quinta stopped Rancho Alamitos’ 47-game Garden Grove League winning streak in girls’ basketball with a 64-60 victory at Rancho Alamitos Wednesday.

Senior guard Linda Rodriguez and sophomore forward Rhonda Gondringer combined for 58 of La Quinta’s 64 points. Rodriguez made six three-pointers, scoring a game-high 33 points and Gondringer added 25 for the Aztecs (12-4, 6-0).

Rancho Alamitos’ leading scorer Akilah Rodgers struggled. She was held scoreless in the first half and finished the game with 14 points.

Michelle Frank, the Vaqueros second leading scorer who injured her ankle in a game with Kennedy, attempted to play in the second quarter but was unable to run. Sally Vasquez and Detra Vickers added 10 points each for Rancho Alamitos (11-6, 5-1).

In other Garden Grove League games:

Kennedy 57, Bolsa Grande 20--Heather Cunningham had 14 points and nine rebounds and Karin Kitagawa added 13 points for Kennedy (12-6, 5-1).

Garden Grove 56, Los Amigos 24--Gina Huizar had 22 points and eight rebounds, Sara Monsoor scored 12 points and Michol Murray added 10 points for host Garden Grove (5-10, 3-3). Carmela Zavala scored seven points for Los Amigos.

Santiago 45, Pacifica 42--Cari Remmel scored 18 points--13 in the first half--for Santiago (5-11, 2-4). Santiago outscored Pacifica, 16-7, in the fourth quarter to take control. Erin Kiyomura scored 17 points and Pilar Surch added 15 for host Pacifica (5-10, 1-5).
