OJAI : Council OKs $40,000 for New Generator

Share

Although the city of Ojai was spared from major damage in the recent earthquake, the City Council is taking no chances that it will lose electricity during future emergencies.

Bids for a new generator at City Hall will go out within weeks, with the City Council approving spending $40,000 to upgrade emergency systems.

Specifications for the new generator call for a 40,000-volt unit--four times the size of the existing system--to be purchased and installed at City Hall. The existing 10,000-volt system will be moved to the Jack Boyd Community Center, a city-owned recreation center at 510 Park Road.

“We have enough power to run City Hall in an emergency, but the key is the Boyd Center because that’s really an emergency shelter,” Mayor Steve Olsen said. “It’s money well spent.”

Like almost everywhere else in Ventura County, the city of Ojai and City Hall lost power for about 10 hours as a result of the 6.6 temblor that struck Northridge last week.

The plan approved by the City Council also calls for installation of a security and fire-alarm system at City Hall at a cost of about $3,400.
