BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : No. 1 Mater Dei Has No Trouble Keeping Record Unblemished

Clay McKnight scored 21 points, including five three-pointers, and Schea Cotton scored 20 as top-ranked Mater Dei defeated Dana Hills, 78-45, in a South Coast League boys’ basketball game Friday night at Dana Hills.

Miles Simon added 14 points for the Monarchs (23-0, 7-0), who led, 40-17, at halftime.

Donald Meyers led Dana Hills (11-11, 4-3) with 18 points.

In other South Coast League games:

Capistrano Valley 77, El Toro 54--John Earnest scored 18 points, and Brandon Puffer added 11 for host Capistrano Valley (15-7, 4-3), which made 10 three-point baskets.

Twelve of Capistrano Valley’s 14 players scored.

Jeff Bone led El Toro (10-12, 2-5) with 11 points.

Mission Viejo 62, San Clemente 61--Freshman Austin Moherman hit two free-throws with 17 seconds left to clinch the game for host Mission Viejo (9-11, 3-4).

San Clemente’s Luke Mannix made a three-pointer with eight seconds left, but San Clemente was unable to gain possession again.

Jerry Reid scored 19 points for Mission Viejo, while Garrett Sleichter scored 17 for San Clemente (10-12, 1-6).

In the Academy League:

St. Margaret’s 75, Liberty Christian 48--Senior guard Lupe Rodriguez was nine for 10 from the field with 26 points, including six three-pointers, for St. Margaret’s (14-3, 5-0). Dave Vaccaro and Bob McClung each had 13 points for Liberty Christian (8-11, 4-2).

Wildomar Cal Lutheran 62, St. Michael’s Prep 45--Jeremy Steele scored 22 points and Josh Bahn 11 for Wildomar Cal Lutheran (3-6, 3-2). Pier Ibe had 14 points for St. Michael’s Prep (3-8, 1-4).

In the Arrowhead League:

Southern California Christian 81, Anza Hamilton 66--Josh Cameron had 32 points and eight assists and Bret Lautt 23 points for Southern California Christian (7-10, 6-1). Nathan Keigan had 24 points for Hamilton (7-11, 4-3).

In the Century League:

Orange 58, Foothill 47--Nick Estrada scored a season-high 18 points and had five steals, and Gil Gonzales added 14 points and 10 rebounds for host Orange (18-2, 6-0), ranked fourth in Orange County.

Sean Morris led Foothill (8-14, 2-4) with 14 points.

Santa Ana Valley 73, Canyon 60--Olujimi Mann scored 25 points for Santa Ana Valley (19-3, 5-1), which took a 15-point lead at halftime and cruised to the victory.

Darnell Adamson added 19 points and Michael Riggins scored 13, nine on three-pointers.

John Werhas scored 26 points for Canyon (7-13, 2-4).

El Modena 77, Villa Park 61--Kirk Jensen scored 20 points for host El Modena (9-12, 3-3).

In the Empire League:

Esperanza 64, El Dorado 53--Mike Thimgan had 26 points and eight rebounds for Esperanza (14-7, 4-2). Dante Spencer had 13 points for El Dorado (6-13, 1-5).

Katella 62, Loara 44--Mike Pahl scored 22 points and Nick Roditis 13 for Katella (12-7, 3-3). Virgil Forbin scored 12 points for Loara (11-10, 1-5)

Los Alamitos 66, Cypress 50--Ali Ton scored 17 points, Brady Doyle added 14, and Ryan Staniec finished with 12 to lead Los Alamitos (18-3, 6-0), the second-ranked team in the county.

Eric Solheim scored 11 points and Derek Mitchell 10 for Cypress (12-9, 3-3).

In the Express League:

Downey Calvary Chapel 64, Claremont 62 (OT)--Charles Fitzhugh scored 27 points for Downey Calvary Chapel, including the only score in overtime.

Gavin Watson, who had 23 points and 20 rebounds, hit the tying shot with three seconds remaining in regulation for Claremont (5-8, 2-8). Steve Kimble added 22 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists for Claremont.

In the Freeway League:

Fullerton 58, Sunny Hills 51--Leading, 49-47, with 3:12 remaining, Fullerton outscored Sunny Hills, 9-2, in the last minutes. Junior forward Tim VanDenburg and Sam Mankiewicz accounted for all nine points.

VanDenburg finished with 15 points for Fullerton (12-10, 3-3), and Chris Young had six assists.

Clint Collins scored 17, including three three-pointers, for Sunny Hills (8-13, 2-4).

La Habra 51, Troy 48--Andrija Kristich scored 14 points, Corey Holbert 12 and Mike Gieldon 11 for visiting La Habra (14-8, 3-3). Greg Abbott scored 20 points for Troy (14-8, 5-1).

Sonora 65, Buena Park 37--Wade Mitchelson had 16 points and 12 rebounds for Sonora (18-4, 5-1), and Craig Clark added 12.

Towan Oliver had 17 points for Buena Park (3-18, 0-6).

Pacific Shores 81, Lake Elsinore Bundy Canyon 44--Joey Lippnik had 16 points and 24 rebounds for Pacific Shores (7-6, 5-4).

Cerritos Valley Christian 73, Whittier Christian 68 (OT)--Tyler Ream scored 21 points, Kevin Berry added 15, and Kwadwo Boachie had 13 for host Whittier Christian (16-3, 7-1).

Calvary Chapel 56, Capistrano Valley Christian 55--Isaac Leasau scored 18 points to lead Calvary Chapel (10-11, 4-3).

In the Orange League:

Magnolia 58, Anaheim 54--Thay Sisomvang and Frank Henderson each made three of four throws in the last two minutes to seal the victory for host Magnolia (15-6, 5-1).

Brandon Hearvey scored 21 points and Henderson added 18, 10 in the fourth quarter, for Magnolia.

Frank Castillo scored 23 points for Anaheim (4-16, 0-6).

Savanna 58, Western 52--Todd Wilson had 25 points, and Jermaine Moore had 13 for Savanna (11-9, 5-1).
