If Arizona’s Khalid Reeves, who is nursing a thumb injury, hadn’t been able to play, it might have been a decent game.

But Reeves scored 35 points as the 13th-ranked Wildcats defeated Oregon State, 100-56, Saturday at Tucson.

The margin of defeat matched the largest ever for the Beavers, who also lost by 44 points to UCLA in 1966. It also represented the most lopsided victory this season for Arizona, which improved to 16-3 overall and 5-2 in the Pacific 10. Oregon State is 5-11, 1-6.

Reeves nearly reached his 23.2-point average in the first half, scoring 22. He left the game with 11:02 to play, having made 11 of 14 shots. He was three for six on three-point attempts and 10 for 10 from the free-throw line.

“My thumb’s been feeling better,” Reeves said. “Everything I put up went in. One time, I put up a shot I thought was off, but it went in, so I knew I was on.”

Said Arizona Coach Lute Olson: “It was one of those rolls where it seemed like he could have scored 60.”

Reeves’ backcourt mate, Damon Stoudamire, added 16 points and had 10 assists, three steals and four rebounds.

Brent Barry led the Beavers with 15 points and Kareem Anderson had 13.

Olson was particularly pleased with the Wildcats’ defensive play.

“The defense was as solid as it’s been in a long time,” he said. “We did everything well. The key to containing Barry is not allowing him to penetrate.”

Washington State 67, Washington 46--Isaac Fontaine scored seven points and Mark Hendrickson five during a game-breaking 16-0 Washington State run late in the first half of the Cougars’ victory at Seattle.

The Huskies (2-14, 0-7) lost their eighth in a row under first-year Coach Bob Bender. They are off to their worst conference start ever and have dropped 11 Pac-10 games in a row over two seasons.

The 21-point loss is Washington’s worst this season, and its 46 points matched its season low.

Tony Harris led Washington State (14-5, 4-3) with 17 points.

Arizona State 84, Oregon 78--Ron Riley scored 21 points as the Sun Devils (10-6, 4-3) beat the Ducks (6-10, 2-5) at Tempe, Ariz.

Arizona State led, 69-66, with 5:47 to play, but Dwayne Fontana and Riley keyed a 9-2 Sun Devil run that secured the victory.

Every Arizona State starter reached double figures. Fontana had 19 points, Mario Bennett 18, Stevin Smith 13 and Isaac Burton 11.
