A teen-ager was fatally shot as he tried to run away following a dispute over gang membership, Santa Ana police said Sunday.

The 15-year-old, whom police would not identify because of his age, was shot in the 1300 block of South Center Street, said Cpl. Bill Barrett, who said police are searching for three suspects in the shooting.

The teen-ager, who was from Santa Ana, and two friends went to a party on Center Street shortly after midnight where they were confronted by several gang members, police said.

The trio tried to leave the party but were followed by the gang members, who drove after the group, police said.

A passenger in the car jumped out and began fighting with the victim, who was shot as he tried to run away, Barrett said.
