The man who was shot and killed by a police officer during a foot chase Friday evening was identified Saturday as Omar Garcia, 18, of Corona.

Police Chief Paul M. Walters, citing department policy, said he would not release the name of the veteran officer who killed Garcia when, according to police, the teen-ager turned and pulled a gun on the officer.

The shooting took place about 5 p.m. Friday in the 900 block of West Russell Avenue, after police stopped a 1964 Chevrolet that matched the description of a car believed to be involved in an earlier drive-by shooting, Sgt. Dick Faust said. No one was injured in the drive-by shooting, Faust said.

After the lone officer halted the vehicle, two passengers fled in different directions, Faust said. The officer followed Garcia, a gang member, as the teen-ager climbed a fence at Martin Elementary School, then pulled out a semiautomatic handgun as he turned to face the officer, Faust said.

The officer fired from a distance of about 30 feet and hit the teen-ager in the chest, police said.

The teen-ager ran a short distance, dropped the handgun and collapsed, Faust said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The other man who fled the vehicle was arrested after a door-to-door search of an eight-square block area. Police did not release his name Saturday but said he was arrested for outstanding warrants. The driver of the vehicle, Edwardo Villamar, 22, of Santa Ana, was detained for questioning, Faust said.

Walters said the incident is under investigation by the Orange County district attorney’s office, which routinely handles officer-involved shootings. The chief declined to comment further.
