Quarterback Mauldin Signs With Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Former Valley College quarterback Joe Mauldin has signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League, the team announced Wednesday.

Mauldin, the 1992 Western State Conference player of the year, led area junior college quarterbacks that season, completing 135 of 263 passes for 1,905 yards and 14 touchdowns. He also ran for 796 yards and 10 touchdowns in 115 carries. He led the Western State Conference with 2,701 total yards.

Mauldin, a 1988 graduate of San Fernando High, was an All-City Section football and basketball player for the Tigers.

He accepted a scholarship to Cal State Fullerton, but did not meet the NCAA-required 700 score on his Scholastic Aptitude Test.

Mauldin then played at Pasadena City College, leaving after one season because of an injury. He was out of football for the next few years, then enrolled at Valley in 1992. Following the season, he signed to play at Missouri Western.

Baseball

Canoga Park High has a coaching opening on its junior varsity baseball team. The team’s season opener is March 21. Walk-on coaches will be considered.

Golf

The northern chapter of the Southern California PGA is conducting a Clubs for Kids Drive on Feb. 19-21 and a series of clinics to help youths become involved in the sport.

Clinics begin March 13 at the San Luis Obispo driving range. The first area clinic is scheduled for Oct. 15 at River Ridge Golf Club in Oxnard.

Donated clubs, which will be cut down and given to beginning players, may be left with any local PGA professional.

The Westlake High baseball boosters club will hold a benefit tournament Feb. 28 at Sunset Hills Country Club in Thousand Oaks.

Entry fee of $125 will include dinner. First tee time is 10 a.m.

Miscellany

Valley College will hold an eight-week sportscasting class beginning Feb. 19.

The course will include instruction on play-by-play, color commentary and interviewing techniques for beginning and advanced broadcasters.
