COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Prince at Long Range Helps Antelope Valley

Danny Prince hit 10 three-point shots, including one in overtime, to lead the Antelope Valley College men’s basketball team to a 103-100 Foothill Conference win over Victor Valley at Marauder Gym on Wednesday.

All of Prince’s field-goal attempts came from three-point range and he scored a game-high 33 points.

He was 10 for 20 from the field and set a school career record for three-point field goals with 165. Prince set a single-game mark with 11 three-pointers in the Marauders’ previous game.

Orville Turner had 27 points and Gary Boyce added 19 for Antelope Valley, which improved to 18-11, 11-4.

Canyons 93, Valley 72--Randy Eason and Kwesi’ Fulton each scored 23 points for the Cougars in a Western State Conference game.

Craig Griffin was the leading scorer for the Monarchs with 17 points and teammate Ryan Jackson added 12.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Canyons 67, Valley 60--The Monarchs led by one with four minutes to play, but the Cougars won by making free throws down the stretch in the Western State Conference game.

Canyons made 23 of 31 free throws in the game, 18 of 25 in the second half.

Janice Van Mourik led Canyons (17-12, 9-0) with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Wendy Wiggins added 15 points and 11 rebounds and Terra Bruessell had 10 assists for the Cougars.

Ventura 63, Santa Barbara 28--The Pirates had more points in the first half than the Vaqueros did in the entire game, and were led by Andrea Williams, who posted 11 points en route to a game high 15 points.

Teammate Camisca Hawkins added 12 points and six steals for Ventura (24-5, 8-1).

Compton 59, Moorpark 57--Janette Oriza had team-high totals of 24 points and eight rebounds but Moorpark fell short in the WSC game. Joy Garcia added 12 points for Moorpark.

BASEBALL

Chaffey 7, Pierce 6; Pierce 10, Santa Monica 1--Lou Tapia was five for eight, including a two-run home run in the first inning against Santa Monica, in the opening day of the Mt. San Antonio College tournament.

Chaffey scored twice in the bottom of the ninth to win the first-round game. Ted Munoz’s two-out single tied the score and Chaffey scored the winning run off reliever Chris Fritz-Smith (0-1) on a throwing error. Jason Warren pitched 8 1/3 innings for Pierce, yielding nine hits and striking out three.

Pierce (2-3) totaled 12 hits against Santa Monica. Cesar Martinez, who was four for nine for the day, had two hits. Kevin Milligan, Jon Novak and Robert Vazquez also had two hits each. Tony Dellamano (1-0) pitched five shutout innings, yielding three hits and striking out eight.

Oxnard 9, Antelope Valley 8--Craig Arnold pitched six strong innings of relief, allowing three earned runs and striking out three to earn the victory.

Catcher Adam Basua went two for four, including a double and a home run, and knocked in two runs.

Jason Young and Matt Anderson each added two hits for Oxnard (2-4).

Ryan Glass took over for Arnold in the eighth inning with the tying run on first and stopped the Marauder threat, earning his second save of the season.

Harbor 4, Mission 2--Harbor’s Josh Bendick pitched the first seven innings and allowed two earned runs, then went to left field to start the eighth. Following two singles and a walk to load the bases, Bendick came on in relief against Luis Alvarez, who hit two homers in his debut Tuesday. Bendick retired Alvarez and returned to left field for the remainder of the game.

Third baseman Rene Rodriguez was two for four with a two-run homer for Mission, while Jeff Poor paced Harbor, going two for three with two runs batted in.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

CS Northridge 5, CS Fullerton 4--Jennifer Cotone and Amy Marks were the only double winners for the Matadors, and they clinched the victory by winning the No. 1 doubles match.

First, Cotone defeated Christa Hanson, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, at No. 2 singles and Marks beat Debbie Denio, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 3 singles.

Cotone and Marks then teamed to defeat Denio and Mandy Gomez, 6-4, 6-1, in doubles. Monica Kocian, CSUN’s No. 1 singles player, also won in the match played at Fullerton. She defeated Kara Kolb, 6-1, 6-2.
