GIRLS’ BASKETBALL PLAYOFF ROUNDUP : Mathews’ Shots Give Magnolia a Victory in Division III-AA
Barbara Mathews hit two free-throws with 15 seconds left to give visiting Magnolia a 40-38 victory over La Habra in a Southern Section Division III-AA wild-card playoff game Wednesday at Magnolia.
Whitney Torregano, who scored 19 points, scored on a 12-foot shot to tie the score, 38-38, with one minute remaining.
Magnolia will face Moreno Valley Rancho Verde (21-2), the Skyline League champions, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
In Division IV-A:
Montebello Cantwell 71, Orange Lutheran 62--Lori Wright scored 16 points but it wasn’t enough for Orange Lutheran (13-11) in a first-round game.
Veronica Quezada led Cantwell (19-6) with 23 points.
Whittier Christian 40, Sierra Madre Alverno 27--Guard Monique Moreno had 13 points to lead visiting Whittier Christian in a wild-card game. Kristi Ralston had 13 rebounds for the Heralds, who will play at Agoura Oak Park at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
In Division V-AA:
Capistrano Valley Christian 46, St. Margaret’s 42--Andie Shaffner had 10 points and 12 rebounds, and Lina Ghosheh had 10 points for Capistrano Valley Christian (12-11) in a first-round game.
St. Margaret’s ends the season at 16-2, with both of its losses coming against Capistrano Valley Christian. The Eagles will play the winner of the game between Downey Calvary Chapel and Avalon.
In Division V-A:
Heritage Christian 47, Liberty Christian 31--Sheri Larson had a game-high 29 points and 14 rebounds for Heritage Christian (14-8). Lynlee Vaccaro led Liberty Christian (14-10) with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
In the second round, Heritage Christian will play third-seeded Arcadia Rio Hondo Prep on Saturday.
