Bradley’s Season Ends After Collision With Grant

Shawn Bradley’s rookie season came to an end Saturday in a doctor’s office in suburban Philadelphia.

The 7-foot-6 Philadelphia 76er center was injured in a collision with Portland Trail Blazer forward Harvey Grant, leaving Bradley with a dislocated kneecap and a bone chip in his left knee.

Jack McPhilemy, the team physician, is expected to conduct an arthroscopic evaluation in two or three days, General Manager Jim Lynam said. Surgery hasn’t been scheduled, and rehabilitation is expected to take about three months.

“While this is a serious injury, (there is) no ligament damage,” Lynam said. “Jack didn’t feel there was any reason to doubt that he’ll make a complete recovery within three months.”

Bradley was hurt 37 seconds into Philadelphia’s 109-93 loss to Portland on Friday night. Bradley went up for a shot when his knee collided with Grant’s left knee.

“I really don’t know what happened,” Bradley said. “I caught the ball, I turned, and my knee popped out and then it popped back in.”

Bradley, the second pick in the draft, averaged 10.5 points and 6.4 rebounds per game.

“I think it’s very fair to say that he’s made significant progress,” Lynam said. “It would have been my expectation that progress would have continued.”
