Cal State Northridge couldn’t buy a basket when it needed one and Southern Utah held on for a 68-61 victory in a nonconference game Thursday night at Northridge.

The Matadors were within a point, 62-61, when Ryan Martin made two free throws with 2:07 left to play, but they failed to score again.

Brooklyn McLinn missed a chance to give Northridge the lead when he missed two free throws with 1:47 to go. The Matadors’ final four possessions ended on three missed layups and a three-point attempt as Southern Utah (14-10) clinched only its second road victory in 11 games.

Reggie Ingram scored 14 points for the Thunderbirds, pacing a balanced scoring attack in which all five starters scored in double figures.

Northridge (7-17) lost its final home game despite a game-high 23 points by guard Andre Chevalier.

Chevalier, a senior, also had six steals, a team-high six rebounds and seven assists, the last of which was his 130th of the season, setting a school season record.
