SCC’s Borders Gains Victory No. 2 : Baseball: Freshman gets into a couple jams, but she goes 6 2/3 innings in 10-1 victory over Concordia.

Southern California College’s Ila Borders, the first woman to pitch in a college baseball game, got into her first collegiate jam Friday at SCC.

Borders, struggling with her control in the third inning against Concordia, threw three consecutive balls to T.J. Wilcoxson with the bases loaded in a scoreless game. Each errant pitch intensified the volume of the razzing from the Concordia dugout.

Time for Borders to fold?

Not this time. After Borders ran the count to 3 and 2, Wilcoxson hit a soft liner up the middle that shortstop Jason Brissey fielded on one hop and threw to first for the out.

Borders got into trouble in several other innings and afterward she admitted her stuff was sub-par, but it was good enough to help the Vanguards win, 10-1, in a round-robin game of the SCC tournament.

Concordia (2-6) never was able to solve the SCC left-hander. Borders gave up three hits and an unearned run in 6 2/3 innings. She walked five, had a wild pitch and struck out one.

Concordia loaded the bases again in the fourth, this time with one out. But Borders got Chris Kindreich to ground to second--SCC almost turned a double play--scoring Concordia’s run, and Alex Vicario grounded to Borders to end the half inning.

SCC (4-6), which beat Claremont-Mudd, 12-1, in Borders’ first start Feb. 15, again gave the freshman from Whittier Christian High plenty of support. The Vanguards scored two in the third and two in the fourth, giving Borders a 5-1 lead. They added two in the seventh and three in the eighth after Borders had been replaced by Brissey in the top of the seventh.

Augie Pena had three hits, including a two-run homer, and four runs batted in.

Among the more than 200 on hand for the game Friday was a camera crew from a Japanese television station.
