BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Morgan Drives Dorsey to City 4-A Finals

Dorsey 70, Cleveland 59--Sherwyn Morgan had 17 points, including 14 in the first half, as Dorsey won a City Section 4-A semifinal Wednesday at Crenshaw High.

Cleveland was reinstated into the playoffs after Carson was discovered to have played its last four games with an ineligible player. Carson had defeated Cleveland on Feb. 25 in the quarterfinals.

Records: Cleveland 20-5; Dorsey 15-11.

Crenshaw 96, Fremont 77--Kris Johnson, Tremaine Fowlkes and Reggie McFerren each scored at least 20 points--24, 22, and 20, respectively--in a City Section 4-A semifinal game Tuesday at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Verbum Dei 93, Crossroads 84--The Eagles used speed and a strong inside game Tuesday evening to overpower the Roadrunners in the Southern Section Division 4-A semifinal action at Dominguez High in Compton.

Records: Verbum Dei 23-2; Crossroads 14-8.

Roosevelt 64, Gardena 44--The pressure of Roosevelt’s three-guard lineup caused 23 turnovers, including 13 steals, as the Roughriders out-distanced the taller Mohicans Tuesday in the City Section 3-A Division semifinals.

Records: Roosevelt 14-11. Gardena 11-14

Banning 66, Bell 63--Forward Jerry Espinoza poured in 43 points, but it wasn’t enough for Bell as Banning held on to win the City 3-A semifinal game Wednesday at South Gate.

Records: Bell 15-11; Banning 18-11.

Girls’ Playoffs

Crenshaw 58, Carson 52--The Cougars scored the final eight points of the game Tuesday to defeat the Colts in a City Section 4-A semifinal at Banning High. It was Crenshaw’s third victory over Carson this season.

Records: Crenshaw 21-5; Carson 22-5.

Roosevelt 60, Washington 54 (OT)--The Roughriders outscored the Generals, 8-2, in overtime Tuesday in a City Section 4-A Division semifinal game at Eagle Rock High.

Records: Washington 18-7; Roosevelt 19-2.

Gardena 50, Jefferson 48--The Mohicans held on for a victory over the defending City Section 3-A champions Tuesday night in a semifinal playoff game after Chaka Smith missed a jump shot from the free-throw line as time expired at Hamilton High.

The defeat ended Jefferson’s 10-game winning streak and the top-seeded Democrats’ bid to become the first school in four years to repeat as 3-A girls’ champion.

Records: Gardena 16-6; Jefferson 19-8.
