SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Clovis West’s best shooting night of the season was enough to easily defeat Mater Dei, 85-49, in a Southern California Regional Division I girls’ basketball game Tuesday night.

The second-seeded Golden Eagles (26-1) made 33 of 53 shots (62%) from the field and made 18 of 24 free throws to bury No. 7 Mater Dei (24-5).

Four Clovis West players scored in double figures, with Adrian Williams leading the way with 18 points. Gilke Jobs made seven of eight shots to finish with 17 points, while freshman Lindsey Dion added 16 and Paige Bowie had 16.

Williams also led Clovis West with 13 rebounds.

“This was by far our best performance,” Eagle Coach Jose Hernandez said. “It came at a good time against a strong team.”

The Eagles took a quick 12-0 lead before the Monarchs stormed back to trail, 14-13, at the end of the first quarter.

Melody Peterson’s three-pointer to start the second quarter gave Mater Dei a short-lived 16-14 lead.

Williams scored eight points and Sara Lien seven in the second quarter for Clovis West, which made 10 of its next 14 shots and outscored Mater Dei, 23-12, to take a 37-25 halftime lead. The Monarchs managed to make five of 12.

“We just came out flat and cold,” Mater Dei Coach Mary Hauser said. “We self-destructed.”

Clovis West’s occasional press limited Mater Dei’s options to a half-court offense.

“We average about 70 points per game,” Hauser said, “and we like the running game. It’s the only way we’re going to win this. We just couldn’t get it all together, and Clovis West has too many weapons.”

Peterson, who averages 15 points, fouled out midway through the fourth quarter. She had a team-high 18 points and teammate Leticia Oseguera finished with 14 points and seven rebounds.

The Eagles continued their torrid shooting in the third quarter, going nine for 14 and making all five free throws to lead, 60-41.

Mater Dei made only two field goals in the fourth quarter, both with about four minutes left after Clovis West’s lead ballooned to 72-42.
