OUTLOOK

The Sailors took their lumps last season with six sophomore starters, but one of those youngsters who made an impact was Freeman, the team’s lone returning all-leaguer. He and Hlista must produce in the middle of the lineup behind Sandstrom, the team’s catalyst. Crucial to the Sailors’ development is the role the seniors take on: Hlista, Burns, Bullard and Smith must step forward and accept some leadership responsibility. Buist is the No. 1 pitcher and should be ready by the time league play begins; he’s rehabilitating a muscle imbalance in his arm. After that, it’s Urban, Grodach and bullpen by committee; McMiniment, a transfer from Corona del Mar, gives the Sailors additional depth. Making the routine plays, offensively and defensively, should go a long way toward their success.
