SAN FERNANDO : 12 Projects Receive $534,545 in Funding

The San Fernando City Council has approved 1994-95 Community Development Block Grant funding for 12 local projects.

In its 20th year in San Fernando, block grant funding is designed to serve the low- and moderate-income population by funding public service projects and housing rehabilitation.

The overall 1994-95 budget for San Fernando is $534,545.

This year’s largest recipient, with $150,000, is the city’s housing rehabilitation program, which provides low-interest and deferred loans and grants to low- and medium-income households for home rehabilitation.

Among the other 11 recipients are a city program to “improve the aesthetics of the community” by removing graffiti from public property, $30,000; a program by El Centro de Amistad and the San Fernando Police Department to provide entertainment for teen-agers to deter them from getting involved with gangs, $30,000; a parent/youth interaction program designed to provide homework assistance to students and computer literacy skills to children and their parents, $5,000; a city after-school child-care program that provides services for low- and moderate-income parents, $19,800; a program by the North Valley Counseling Center to help youths who have not been in juvenile hall but have experienced problems with the law, $16,145, and a program by the North Valley Family Counseling Center to help youths returning from juvenile hall enter their school and home environments, $22,146.

San Fernando is one of 50 cities participating in the County Community Development Block Grant Program, administered by the Los Angeles County Community Development Commission.
