COLLEGE ROUNDUP : BYU Sweeps CSUN Despite Strong Play by Heitmann

The Cal State Northridge men’s volleyball team couldn’t handle Brigham Young’s front line and lost, 15-10, 15-11, 15-11, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match Friday at Provo, Utah.

Oliver Heitmann, a 6-foot-7 junior, had a match-high 27 kills for CSUN (8-7, 4-5). Craig Hewitt added 15 kills and Gary Reznick had 68 assists.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

CS Northridge 5, Yale 4--Monica Kocian, Jennifer Cotone and Amy Marks posted singles victories for CSUN, but a doubles victory won the match. Kocian and Tracy Spellman defeated Katherine Rhee and Tina Ansari, 6-3, 7-6, winning the tiebreaker, 7-5.

BASEBALL

Canyons 13, Bakersfield 10--Jim Traylor had three hits for Canyons (6-7, 2-3) in a Western State Conference game at Bakersfield.

SOFTBALL

Canyons 6, Bakersfield 0--Rene Petrie had a pair of doubles, and Jamie Dean and Cheryl Towery each added two hits for Canyons (4-8) in a WSC opener at Bakersfield.

Antelope Valley 5, Citrus 0--Heather Meyer fired a one-hitter, struck out 15 and collected two hits for Antelope Valley (10-3) in a Foothill Conference opener at Citrus. Evette Allen had three hits, including a triple.

GOLF

Cal State Northridge was in fourth place after the first round of the Southern California Intercollegiate Championships at Torrey Pines (South) Golf Course. The Matadors, led by Chad Holden’s four-over-par 76, shot 318, 15 shots behind leader UC Irvine.

TRACK & FIELD

Moorpark 77, Bakersfield 52 1/2, Santa Monica 51 1/2--Isaiah Mustafa won five events to lead Moorpark (8-0) in the triangular meet at Santa Monica College.
