COLLEGE BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Valley, Down by Four Runs Early, Catches Glendale, Wins in the 9th

Leading by four runs after two innings Tuesday against Valley, Glendale threatened to turn the Western State Conference game into an early rout. But the Monarchs stuck around to tie it in the sixth on Ozzie Areu’s two-run double and burned the Vaqueros at the end, 8-6, at Glendale.

In the top of the ninth inning, Valley’s Will Skett and Areu hit back-to-back home runs to win it.

In other Western State Conference games:

Santa Barbara City 5, Oxnard 2--Matt Anderson had two hits and teammates Jess Oliveras and Ryan Gause each singled in a run for at Oxnard (6-10, 3-3).

Canyons 6, Santa Monica 2--Right-hander Gary Stephenson gave up two hits in seven innings, for the Cougars (7-8, 3-4) at Santa Monica. Third baseman Ted Kiester led the Canyons offense by going three for four with two doubles and two RBIs.

Moorpark 8, Ventura 5--Britten Pond, Kevin Nykoluk and Aaron Whitley each had two hits, leading the Raiders (8-7-1, 3-3). Jeff Naster (4-1) picked up the victory.

Bakersfield 4, Pierce 3--George Romo struck out 11 in eight innings to lead the Renegades. Cesar Martinez led the Brahmas (8-8, 4-3) with three hits, including a double and his first home run.
