Share

Two women were injured when their catering truck rear-ended a gasoline tanker on San Diego Freeway in Granada Hills, shutting down three lanes of traffic for more than four hours, said a California Highway Patrol officer.

None of the 47,000 gallons of gasoline in the tanker were spilled in the 6:15 a.m. crash. The tanker’s driver was not injured.

The driver of the catering truck, Susana Torres, 32, of Canyon Country suffered a broken arm and legs. The passenger, Morena Carranza, 39, of North Hills suffered broken legs, said the CHP. Both were treated at Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills.

The catering truck was traveling about 50 m.p.h. when it hit the gasoline tanker, which had made a stop north of Devonshire Street, the CHP said.

The crash dented, but did not puncture, the rear of the tanker. “They could have been burned to death had it ruptured,” the CHP spokesman said.
