PREP ROUNDUP : Huntington Beach Upends Mater Dei in Softball

Huntington Beach defeated Mater Dei, 3-2, in a nonleague softball game Friday at Huntington Beach High.

Nicky Shavira led the way for the Oilers with two runs batted in.

Jessica Walker tripled and scored a run and pitched a scoreless final three innings for the save, her first of the season. Huntington Beach is 5-1. Mater Dei, ranked seventh in the Southern Section Division I preseason poll, is 5-2.

In other nonleague softball games:

Loara 6, Troy 0--Freshman Chrissy Hartman pitched a two-hitter, striking out nine, and scored two runs for visiting Loara (5-4).

Rancho Alamitos 6, Valencia 0--Julie Littman went four for four with two home runs and two RBIs, and Jill Otto pitched a one-hitter and struck out seven for Rancho Alamitos (5-2). Valencia falls to 3-6.

Rosary 8, Estancia 0--Nicola Walsh was three for four, scored two runs and drove in three, and Regina Martin had two hits and scored a run for visiting Rosary (2-1).

In Sea View League boys’ tennis:

Santa Margarita 14, Irvine 7--All three doubles teams swept for the Eagles (3-4, 1-2). Irvine is 0-3 in league.

Woodbridge 11, Newport Harbor 10--Woodbridge improved to 7-1 and 2-1 in league with the narrow victory despite singles sweeps by both Geoff Abrams and Jeff Thomsen for the Sailors (4-3, 2-1).

In nonleague boys’ tennis:

Trabuco Hills 14 1/3 Mission Viejo 6 2/3--The Mustangs’ doubles teams of Bryan Johnson-Josh Rubel and Nolan Cooper-Mario Mikula both swept. Trabuco Hills is 3-4, Mission Viejo 1-6.
