HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Palmdale Opens League Play With 13-3 Win Over Highland

Senior left-hander Bob Harmon allowed one run in five innings of relief to lead Palmdale High to a 13-3 victory over Highland on Friday in a Golden League opener at Palmdale.

Harmon gave up four hits and struck out nine. Chris Paxton broke the game open in the third with a two-run single to give Palmdale a 6-2 lead.

The Falcons added five runs in the fourth and two in the fifth.

Shad Martin had two hits and three runs batted in for Palmdale (5-1 overall).

Ben Mia was three for four for Highland.

Antelope Valley 9, Quartz Hill 2--Chris Tapia hit a two-run home run in the seventh and Antelope Valley took advantage of five errors to post a Golden League win. Kyle Goss had a home run among his four hits and two RBIs for Quartz Hill.

Littlerock 7, Ridgecrest Burroughs 6--Littlerock scored seven runs in the final three innings to win a Golden League opener.

Littlerock (5-1) trailed, 6-0, but John Hanggee led the Lobos’ rally with a two-run home run in the fifth and a triple to score the winning run in the seventh.

Arcadia 3, Glendale 2--Loren Geller had three hits and two RBIs for visiting Glendale (2-3) in a Pacific League opener, but it was not enough.

David Gantt picked up his second loss of the year despite scattering six hits and five strikeouts with an intentional walk.

Hoover 7, Muir 5--Amador Solis (2-0) pitched a complete game and drove in two runs in a Pacific League opener.

Mike Farver was three for four, Chris Butler two for three with three RBIs and Rob Ostray two for four with a two-run triple for Hoover.

Calabasas 7, Santa Paula 0--Josh Morton pitched a complete game, striking out 10 as Calabasas (6-0) won a Frontier League opener.

Morton has completed his last two starts, striking out 21. Six players hit doubles for Calabasas.

Harvard-Westlake 5, Chaminade 1--Senior left-hander Scott Garson (3-0) tossed his second complete game, scattering four singles and striking out five for Harvard-Westlake (4-3, 3-1) in a Mission League game.

David Tuizer, Dan Mason and Chris Anderson each had two hits for the Wolverines.

Oxnard 3, San Marcos 3--Chuck Harrington had two hits and stole two bases for Oxnard in a Channel League game called because of darkness.

Sylmar 8, Venice 2--Senior right-hander Carlos Valazco (2-1) struck out seven and walked one in six innings for Sylmar (5-3) in the Sylmar tournament.

Hiryam Damwijk was two for four with a home run and a double.

Burroughs 8, Canoga Park 2--Robert Mena (2-0) tossed a complete game, striking out nine for Burroughs (5-3) in an L.A. Invitational game. Chris Centeno was two for two with three runs and teammate Mike Delgado was two for two with two RBIs for Burroughs. Kevin Fishman was two for three with an RBI triple for Canoga Park.

Taft 12, Westchester 8--Taft spotted Westchester a 6-0 first-inning lead, then rallied to win a Sylmar tournament game at Westchester. David Helman had a double and a triple with three RBIs and Jacob Young added two hits and three RBIs for Taft (4-4).

Buckley 11, St. Genevieve 4--Jon Hanish, Mitch Brim and Keith Armstrong each had two hits to lead Buckley’s 10-hit attack in the seventh-place game of the L.A. Baptist tournament.

Brim (1-0) started and allowed two hits over four innings.

Oak Park 20, Faith Baptist 3--Oak Park banged out 24 hits--23 of them singles--to lead the host Eagles in a nonleague game.

Camron Macarelli pitched a complete game, striking out eight, and allowed Faith Baptist only three hits. Robbie Sherwin had four hits for Oak Park (3-1-1).

Village Christian 7, Carpinteria 5--Jason Robitaille’s two-run single snapped a 5-5 tie and capped a five-run sixth for Village Christian in the nonleague game at Tujunga Senior Field.

The Crusaders (7-1) converted two Carpinteria errors, a hit batsman and three hits into five runs in the inning. David Gustafson, Mike Agnor and Robitaille each had two hits for Village Christian.

BOYS’ TRACK

Granada Hills 69, Taft 58--Danny Haag, one of the top high school decathletes in the nation, won four events to lead the host Highlanders in the Northwest Valley Conference opener.

Haag posted marks of 14.9 seconds in the 110-meter high hurdles, 6 feet in the high jump, 11-6 in the pole vault and 20-9 in the long jump.

Andre DeSaussure of Taft (1-1, 1-1), the defending City Section champion in the 100, 200 and 400, won the 440-yard dash in 49.9 in his outdoor season debut.

DeSaussure has been recovering from a strained hamstring.

El Camino Real 81, Cleveland 36--Brian Tade of visiting El Camino Real (1-1, 1-1) turned in the best mark of the Northwest Valley Conference meet with a personal best of 55-9 1/2 in the shotput.

Tade, third in the shotput in last year’s City championships, has improved his personal best by more than three feet this season.

Birmingham 122, Poly 5--James Lincoln won three events for visiting Birmingham (2-0, 2-0) in the Valley Pac-8 Conference meet.

Lincoln, fifth in the high jump in last year’s state championships, cleared 6-2 to win his specialty, timed 15.8 in the 120-yard high hurdles and spanned 20-11 in the long jump.

Monroe 87, Sylmar 34--Kenny Hopson won the 100 meters in 11.0, the 220 yards in 22.6, and anchored Monroe’s 440-yard relay team to victory in 43.2 in the Valley Pac-8 Conference meet at Sylmar. The Vikings are 2-0 in league meets.

SOFTBALL

Hart 10, Santa Monica 0--Sophomore Mary Colleran (8-1) tossed a four-hit shutout to lead Hart (8-1) to the championship of the Hoover tournament.

Tracy Clark was two for two with three runs and Christina Davis went two for three.

Hoover 7, La Canada 2--Daphne Vadman (two for four), Emily Carlson (three for four), Theresa Sahagun (two for three) and Norma Solis (two RBIs) led an 11-hit attack for Hoover (5-4) in a third-place game of the Hoover tournament.

Santa Paula 3, Calabasas 2--The Coyotes (3-2) stranded nine runners and committed six errors in a Frontier League opener.

Jennifer Goodelinus and Kristin Olaffson each had two hits for Calabasas. Melissa Krolik (2-2) took the loss despite striking out eight and allowing four hits.

Louisville 16, St. Bernard 1--Lindsay Harris struck out 11 and Andrea Dominguez had three RBIs in a Mission league opener.

Alemany 4, Chaminade 1--Gloria Dominguez drove in two runs during Alemany’s four run sixth inning as the Indians opened Mission league play with a win.

Dominguez had two hits and Esmeralda Macias added three hits for Alemany (5-1).

Oakwood 5, Brentwood 1--Oakwood sophomore Susie Vatz (2-1) allowed four hits and struck out 10 to lead the Gorillas (2-1) to a nonleague win.

Oakwood first baseman Emily Frydrich was three for three with two RBIs. Lisa Forrester took the loss despite striking out 12.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Thousand Oaks d. Agoura, 15-4, 15-10, 19-17--Jason Hartman had 20 kills to lead the host Lancers (4-0) to a Marmonte League victory.

David Sotolof added 10 kills for Thousand Oaks and Bryant Edwards made 36 assists.
