Los Amigos, which finished third in the Garden Grove League last year, is showing improvement, thanks in large part to Tran. He had 25 kills in the Lobos’ 8-15, 15-3, 15-4 victory over El Modena in the title match of the Laguna Hills tournament Saturday and 17 kills Wednesday in a three-game sweep of Rancho Alamitos. Los Amigos Coach David Avalos said Tran is an excellent passer, but it’s his hitting that sets him apart. “Even if he’s in the back row, they better keep an eye on him,” Avalos said, “because he can attack from anywhere.”

Other notables:

* Mike Lauder, Servite, shot one-over-par 36 at Hacienda in a 204-215 Sunset League victory over Huntington Beach.

* Jason Marian, Mission Viejo, had a home run, double and seven runs batted in the Diablos’ 18-16 victory over University.

* Dan Stiles, Laguna Beach, had 36 kills as Laguna Beach beat Capistrano Valley, 7-15, 15-17, 15-8, 15-10, 15-11.

* Chris Vlasic, Pacifica, had 28 points and 11 rebounds in an 81-61 loss to Sacramento Foothill in the State Division III title game.
