Parolee Shot After Chase as Deputy Escapes Harm : Crime: The pursuit ends when the Palmdale man crashes his vehicle into a patrol car. The suspect is in serious condition.

A parolee was shot several times by a sheriff’s deputy late Thursday after a brief car chase that ended when the man drove onto an embankment, put his car in reverse and nearly hit a deputy, authorities said.

The parolee, Steven Blade Jackson, 24, of Palmdale, was reported in serious condition Friday at Antelope Valley Hospital Medical Center. No officers were injured in the incident.

An arrest warrant had been issued for Jackson last month after he tested positive for methamphetamine use and moved to a new address without notifying his parole officer, said Ron Breeden, acting supervisor of the Antelope Valley Parole Unit.

He was released from state prison in January after serving almost a year for burglary, according to state records.

Jackson’s arrest on Thursday night, however, stemmed from an apparent traffic violation.

Two plainclothes deputies in an unmarked car tried to stop Jackson’s pickup truck at 11:09 p.m. after they saw it speeding south on 20th Street East with its headlights off, Deputy Patrick Hauser said.

A third deputy, Dave Moore, wearing a uniform and driving a marked patrol car, joined in the pursuit.

Jackson tried to pull his truck into a driveway at an apartment complex, but turned too quickly and stopped on a grassy embankment, Hauser said. Moore pulled his patrol car behind the pickup and got out, along with the plainclothes deputies.

“The suspect put his car in reverse and accelerated,” Hauser said. Moore then “jumped back into his radio car and barely escaped injury as the suspect’s truck slammed into the (driver’s side) door of the radio car.”

As the truck was moving backward, one of the plainclothes deputies, 11-year veteran Brian Schoonmaker, fired at Jackson, striking him several times in the upper body, Hauser said.

Jackson told deputies and paramedics that he fled because he was wanted for parole violation, Hauser said. A sheriff’s spokesman added that deputies recovered what appeared to be two packets of methamphetamine that Jackson tried to discard during the chase.

After undergoing treatment for his wounds, Jackson will be held without bail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer, deputies said.
